A Message from the President

Building

Our re-development contract will be signed this Thursday with building to commence on February 12th 2018.  Completion is expected in early August.  We have a lot of packing up to do to have the site clear and this will start from mid January.  Assistance from any members who are available will be greatly appreciated.

If you’d like to be involved track down one of our Board members and they will be happy to discuss – even an hour or two here and there can be a huge help if a lot of us get involved.  We’ll also be looking for storage for a lot of what is currently in the club so if anyone has any contacts or innovative ideas we’d love to talk.

A Big Thanks to a Lot of People

The volunteer spirit around the club this season has been nothing short of fantastic.

We’ve had our regular volunteers, patrolling members, Nipper coaches and helpers, Canteen staff, water cover, Officials, trailer packers and towing, School patrols Board of Management, club officers and committee members.

We’ve also had a core of Bunnings BBQers, Social function organisers (Quiz, Balcony Sundays, Disco, Breakfast on the balcony), volunteer bar staff, beer line cleaners, window cleaner, admin support with pays and banking, event support (especially 2 weekends ago with the Open Water Swim, Carols by the Lake set up and pack up – members were on the job from 6:00am to 10:00pm), communications, and many more.

A sincere thankyou to you all, your contributions continue to build our club into a great place for us to meet and for our kids (and their kids) to grow up and develop into active, community minded people.

Regards,

Mick Kenny

Next week will be the last Nippers of the year and to celebrate the festive season we’ll be holding our annual Nippers Christmas Party!  See below for all the details.

As mentioned previously Junior Carnival Number 2 has moved to Glenelg on December 17th.  More details on that coming soon.

See you on the beach!

Last weekend’s Branch Carnival was at West Beach and we had a great turnout.  Thank you to all Nippers who attended.  The next branch carnival is 14th January and Henley Surf Club.

Junior Carvinal number 2 has been moved from Christie’s Beach to Glenelg on 17th of December.  More information will be available next week.

Board training is on this Friday evening subject to the weather.  Meet on the grass at 5pm.

Canteen this Saturday will be staffed by Under 13’s.  Volunteer parents please remember to wear closed in shoes.  We will need minimum of 4 helpers.

A reminder to everyone to check to ensure that your (including each of your children) Surfguard Membership renewals have been done.  If they haven’t you will not be covered by SurfSA’s insurance and so technically not able to participate in Training from 1 Dec 2018.

See you on the beach!

Port Adelaide Pageant – the festive season is here!

Semaphore SLSC has again been a proud entrant in the Port Adelaide Christmas Pageant.  We had a great turn out of members and were well represented on the streets of Port Adelaide.  A big thank you to Ian Biggs for towing the boat.  Thank you to all of the children who participated, especially at the end of a long day with the Branch Carnival as well!  Thank you to the wonderful parents of our Club who turned up and supervised their children throughout the parade.  We are a family club and that was evident throughout our involvement.

We need you at the Semaphore Street Fair!

We are lucky to be a part of the Semaphore Street fair again this Sunday.  We are seeking volunteers.  If you can help out between 1pm and 2pm or 2pm and 3pm please comment below this post.  Your help to promote our Club will be most appreciated.

Christmas Pageant – Come and join the parade!

We will be entering a float at this year’s Port Adelaide Christmas Pageant which is being held on this Saturday evening November 25th in Port Adelaide.  It would be great to have as many Juniors and Seniors marching as possible.

We will towing one Surf Boat and will take up to ten juniors in the boat. Names will be taken on a first come first served basis but with priority placed on the younger children getting preference over the older kids.  We would love to see any SRC’s and Bronzies in uniform to assist in supervising while the floats are in motion!!!

Dress for the day is:

  • Semaphore Skull Caps for all juniors and red Semaphore Shirts for all juniors that have them
  • Patrol hats and shirts for seniors and patrolling members.
  • If you are a non patrolling parent that wants to walk with the group, please wear any Semaphore gear that you have (you could always stop by the uniform shop on Saturday morning if you don’t)
  • Optional tinsel and Christmas decorations.

Participants should be at Lipson St (between St Vincent and Russell St – I think we’ll be closer to St Vincent St) anytime after 4:00pm and before 5:30pm. The Pageant kicks off at 6pm but there are many road closures and experience says getting a park starts getting tricky after 4:30pm. Our float should be recognisable with the Surf Boat but we are in section G.

The Parade ends at Lipson St / St Vincent St intersection.

For any questions and to confirm your attendance and claim a place in a surf boat, please email Steph Breden fizzgig.pand@gmail.com or call on 0429 046 362

More information can be found on the Port Adelaide website or on the Port Adelaide Pageant Facebook event page.

Look forward to seeing you there!

West Beach Junior Branch Carnival

This Saturday will see the first Junior Branch Carnival held at West Beach.  Following is some information about the running of the day, food options and an attachment showing the proposed program and site map.  Members are expected on the beach no later than 1pm for our usual catch-up.  Come and Try participants have the week off so we’ll see you in Semaphore next week.
  • It’s proposed that there are 1-2 people (AGMs etc) in charge of each station to coordinate the events conducted there & keep the group moving through efficiently with the assistance of other AGMs who will move from station to station with the age group.
  • Water safety personnel will be in each of the 4 water areas.  It would be fantastic to have some of our own water cover volunteers on hand to help out.
  • Team events will involve mixed club teams to promote branch integration.
  • No results will be recorded on the day as participation will be the focus to ensure everyone has a go.
  • WBSLSC will set the beach up so Semaphore SLSC will just need to bring trailers and park as per site map immediately north of club on dirt patch.  We’ve been asked to bring a couple of rescue boards for water cover folk. WBSLSC will provide IRBs including drivers/crew.
  • Food options for the day include a Sausage Sizzle from 3:15pm – includes a $5 meal deal – sausage in bread + juice box + small donut.  This will be located on the grassed area just to the north of the club.  There will also be lollies and popcorn available for sale.  The Surf Club Cafe will also be open all afternoon and evening for tea, coffee, drinks, chips/wedges, dip platters, ice creams and meals from 5:30pm (best to book at table if staying for dinner 8353 8503)
