North Have Surf Club has offered to allow those still requiring to undertake Wet or Dry Proficiencies to partake in their scheduled proficiency over Friday evening and Saturday morning. Please book in with Jennie at instructor@semaphoreslsc.com.au to get the times so that we can confirm numbers with North Haven Assessors.

Thanks to the 11 members that used Sunday 14 January at Semaphore to get proficient and 1 member that used Henley’s opportunity to complete their IRB Crew Proficiency. Junior Weekly Report

So Nippers isn’t all about Surf Sports.

When we get the chance, like Saturday with the cooler temp, we also teach what we call Surf Ed.  Here we see some Under 7’s and Under 8’s learning about D.R.S.A.B.C.D. (that’s Danger, Response, Send (for help), Airway, Breathing, Compressions, and Defibrillation).

Surf Ed is taught at different levels depending on the Age Group with a view for our Under 13’s to be ready to complete their Surf Rescue Certificate training at 14 years of age. Once completed they are ready to join a patrol group and be eligible to provide water cover for Junior carnivals and training.

A huge thanks to Brad Tunbridge for running these very valuable Surf Ed sessions on Saturday.

It’s worth noting any students who are Club Members and have completed a Surf Rescue Certificate or Bronze Medallion can have these awards recognised by registering them with their school VET Coordinator to gain SACE credits. See the following for more information Surf Life Saving and SACE.pdf

New Volunteer Opportunity: Safeguarding Officers

Surf Life Saving SA have requested that each club has a minimum of 2 Safeguarding Officers per club Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club takes the protection of our members very seriously and want to ensure that we have a range of people across all areas that our young people aged under 18 are involved in.  The Safeguarding Officer Role replaces the Nipper Safe Officer Role taking into account that legislation covers everyone under the age of 18.  Those in the Role will be identified to members on our website, have their photo up in the club so they can be identified by new members and will deal with complaints raised by members regarding any issues around safety of children as well as being involved in supporting development of policies to keep the children and young people safe.

Safeguarding Officers are required to be aged 18 or over and have or be willing to undertake:

  • Department of Social Inclusion Children’s Clearance
  • Responding to Abuse and Neglect Certificate or Child Safe Environments Course
  • Surf Life Saving Safeguarding Children Training Program – Next Training offered on Wednesday 17 January 2018

Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club would like to have a male and female identified within the Juniors Training, Seniors Training, Patrols and within the Awards Training Team.  At this time Jennie Charlton and Sean McKenzie have been identified as the Board of Management Safeguarding Officers at this stage and will support any members in undertaking this role. Please contact Jennie on instructor@semaphoreslsc.com.au if you would like to know more about this role or would like to nominate yourself by Monday 15 January 2018 so we can book you into course.

A Run Swim Run and Rescues has been booked in for 11:30am. Those attending will be expected to support the setting up of the course and the patrol. An opportunity to complete your Dry proficiencies and ATV assessment will also be offered at this time so if you have completed your ATV workbook and bring your licence this can be done on the day.  Please note that there is also training of a new Bronze group and  pre-assessment of a Bronze Group with their assessment pending on 21 January 2018 so please come along expecting to help out with patrol

A further Run Swim Run and rescues will then be ran at 3pm and those attending this would be expected to help clear away all equipment from proficiencies ensuring that it is washed and put away.
