Junior Weekly Report

Firstly congratulations to all those who attended and competed at the Normanville Carnival on the weekend.  The conditions were perfect and Semaphore competitors did our Club proud.  The depth of water was very confronting for some of our younger competitors but they showed courage and determination to have a go, many completing their first competitive swims.

A huge thank you to all of the Age Managers, assistants and parent helpers, as well as water cover volunteers over the two days.

Board Training

Board training as usual this week, except with the board trailer being stored off site it will be on a BYO Board basis only.

Semaphore Training for all Age Groups this Week.

Back to normal this week with training at Semaphore for all age groups at the usual time.

Muster at 12:45pm        Training Starts 1:00pm

**IMPORTANT**

There will be a short meeting for U8 to U13 parents regarding State Qualifying and State Championship Carnivals and the nomination process.

HI-VIS VESTS.

Surf Life Saving SA has notified us of the requirements for Hi-vis Vests for both Qualifying and State Carnivals. Competitors may wear either Pink or Yellow (or the new combination Yellow Front, Pink Back version). However, the Hi-Vis Vest irrespective of colour cannot be faded, and that a competitor with a faded Hi-Vis will not be allowed to compete.

Please see Steph Breden this Saturday for any queries regarding this ruling or for information regarding obtaining a new Hi-Vis Vest.

State Qualifying Carnival – 24th Feb – Grange SLSC

We are beginning to get further clarification regarding the State Qualifying Carnival, while we do not have a schedule we do know which events are slated for each age group.

Under 8 Under 9 Under 10 Under 11 Under 12 Under 13
Sprints Sprints Sprints Sprints Sprints Sprints
Flags Flags Flags Flags Flags Flags
1km Team Run 1km Team Run 1km Team Run 1km Team Run 1km Team Run 1km Team Run
Buchannon Buchannon Buchannon Brace Relay Board Rescue Board Rescue
Board Relay Board Relay Iron Person Iron Person Iron Person

Your Age Group Managers will be asking you today if your child is available to compete.

**PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

It is important to understand that if you say YES, that once your child is included in a team then that team is relying on them in order to compete.  If you don’t show the entire team cannot compete.  Conversely if you don’t nominate to compete you will not be able to turn up on the day and expect to be included.

In addition, as the title suggests this is a qualifying carnival. This carnival’s aim is to reduce the quantity of competitors in specific events to manageable quantities to ensure the State Championships can run to a given time schedule. eg Flags – at qualifying competitors for each age group will be reduced to the final 16 who will then compete at the State Championships for Medals.

But it also means that if a team (Jo, Peter, Alex, Sam) qualifies to compete at the State Championships that same team (Jo, Peter, Alex, Sam) must compete.  There may be an allowance to alter a team member due to illness or injury but only after petition to the Carnival referee is successful. So again, when nominating for qualifying, please consider that you will be required to attend both Qualifying as well as State Championship Carnivals if successful.

SO PLEASE THINK CAREFULLY WHEN NOMINATING TO ATTENDING THIS QUALIFYING CARNIVAL

Note – The 1 km Team Run will be competed down to Medals. That means that the Heats, Semi-finals and Finals will be run for each Age Group on this day, with medals presented at the State Championship Carnival 2 weeks later.

Finally a special thank you to all the patrol & Club members for their help on Friday cleaning up the junior side of the club.

A Note from the President

It’s really happening! All systems are go for the rebuild and we have a few important things to do to make it happen smoothly.

Firstly a big thanks to those who helped out last weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and the two weeks prior, some tireless efforts from some brave volunteers who gave up their mornings/afternoons in some less than ideal conditions to sort, shred and move documents, goods, fixtures, fittings, competition gear, uniforms and other sundry items to storage or trash.

Last meals at the club for several months will be this Thursday and Friday, expect some more great specials and say a fond farewell, for now at least, to our kitchen staff who’ve delivered a great product and shown the flexibility to work with an environment run by volunteers.

This Saturday morning after “the last supper” we want to get stuck in to the kitchen and get packing what we can from in there, cooking utensils, pots, pans and “crocklery” (the word that came out of my mouth when I was trying to say either cutlery or crockery last Saturday evening on the balcony).  There will be some reasonably light weight work in the kitchen boxing and some heavier work moving boxes from the kitchen to containers or skip.  There is also the office and a few other bits and pieces to be tucked away. The fun will begin at 9:00am so if you can spare an hour or two (or more) at some stage through the day your help will be greatly appreciated.

There is also a gym full of goodies to be packed and stacked for storage (many thanks to Owen) and a beautiful old wooden boat to be lifted from the ceiling and taken to a temporary resting place.

Sunday Kevvy Metal returns – hopefully to the balcony this time to deliver his power packed performance through one of his many bands – think 70’s 80’s 90’s Rock and Roll, big crowd, big fun drink specials, sausage sizzle “Be there or be Elsewhere!”.  $10 a head with drink specials.  party gets underway at 2pm.

We hand over the keys to the club on Monday 12th Feb and projected date for completion is early August.  We will have weekend drinks from the shed and will organize some club nights at other venues when the weather gets serious.  I’ll work with the board and Kate “Queen of Comms” Newman to keep you up to date so look out for bulletins for other social events, footy tipping etc and let us know if you have any ideas for other off season socials.

Mick Kenny

Closing Down Party this Sunday!

Get along to our Closing Down Party this Sunday 4th February.  Legendary local band Deep Throat will be entertaining us as we prepare for an exciting new refurbishment of the Club ready for the new season.

$10 a head & Drink Specials at the Club.

Urgent Attention: Training 17/1/18 for New Volunteer Opportunity: Safeguarding Officers at Henley Surf Club at 7pm

Please advise Jennie on instructor@semaphoreslsc.com.au if able to attend the Training at Henley  Surf Lifesaving Club at 7pm on Wednesday 17 January 2018

Surf Life Saving SA has requested that each club has a minimum of 2 Safeguarding Officers per club.  Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club takes the protection of our members very seriously and want to ensure that we have a range of people across all areas that our young people aged under 18 are involved in.  The Safeguarding Officer Role replaces the Nipper Safe Officer Role taking into account that legislation covers everyone under the age of 18.  Those in the Role will be identified to members on our website, have their photo up in the club so they can be identified by new members and will deal with complaints raised by members regarding any issues around safety of children as well as being involved in supporting development of policies to keep the children and young people safe.

Safeguarding Officers are required to be aged 18 or over and have or be willing to undertake:

  • Department of Social Inclusion Children’s Clearance
  • Responding to Abuse and Neglect Certificate or Child Safe Environments Course
  • Surf Life Saving Safeguarding Children Training Program – Next Training offered on Wednesday 17 January 2018

Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club would like to have a male and female identified within the Juniors Training, Seniors Training, Patrols and within the Awards Training Team.  At this time Jennie Charlton and Sean McKenzie have been identified as the Board of Management Safeguarding Officers and will support any members in undertaking this role.
