Future Development of the Semaphore SLSC

Dear Members ,

 

What an exciting time we have ahead of ourselves , after 18 long months we finally received our Formal Planning Consent from the Charles Sturt Council for our proposed upgrade redevelopment of the Semaphore SLSC. This is the first major step of a very complex process which I won’t bore you with at this stage.

 

We have proposed to SLSSA to “stage” our redevelopment into two main Stages , Stage 1 would be the construction of the new storage shed & stage 2 would be the club itself. Funding will be by means of part Government , part Local Council & part Club which will require us to some serious fund raising over the next 12 months.

We are calling for EOI for a dedicated fund raising committee (approx. 4-5 people) initially and also that of a Building Committee which will be a bit further down the track.

Semaphore AGM 7th August

The Semaphore SLSC AGM will be held on the 7th August. Prior to this we will have our financial report available to all members for review from the 7th July. If you are interested in seeing the financial report before the AGM please email the Secretary at sslsc@bigpond.net.au. All positions will become vacant at the AGM, if you are interested in applying for any of these positions or after more information on the positions, please do so via writing or email to the Secretary.

VOLUNTEER BAR ASSISTANTS – EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST SOUGHT

The BOM is interested in trialling the use of volunteers from our Senior Membership in assisting the

bar staff on some days over the winter months.

Everyone would be aware of the excellent service provided by our dedicated bar staff over the years

and that over the winter period, particularly on most Saturdays and Sundays, the number of

customers is markedly reduced. The BOM is keen to trial the bar running with only one paid staff

member with back-up provided by volunteers if the bar gets busy on any of the Saturday or Sunday

shifts when there are no functions or events booked for that day.

The typical duties of the volunteer would not be primarily directed to customer service, but in

returning glasses and bottles to the bar, possibly re-stocking fridges, changing kegs and helping to

lock up at the end of the shift. On very limited occasions it may be necessary to assist behind the bar

with the bar staff operating the tills. These duties would only need to be performed if the bar staff

are under pressure and cannot undertake these tasks without disrupting customer service.

It is hope to get enough volunteers from our more regular bar visitors so that we can form a roster

with a number of volunteers rostered for each shift. This will allow these members to share these

duties and work out their shift requirements between themselves with a team leader appointed to

coordinate and liaise with the bar staff. It is envisaged that each volunteer team would not be

rostered more than once a month over this 4-5 month period. Similar to the patrol roster.

With the exiting news of finally receiving Planning Consent from Charles Stuart Council for our

upgrade planned for the Club , it is important for the Club to maximise our resources of revenue to

help pay for these improvements in facilities.

Friday night Bistro + Club Draw

We have recently updated our Friday night Bistro menu and invite all club members and member of the public to come down and try the new Menu put together by our Chef and his team.

Friday night is also the club draw which is worth $600 this week and will be drawn between 7 and 8pm. Members must be present to win.

Club Working Bee

Previous years has seen us run our Club Working Bee in September near the start of the season. The problem with that is a lot of damaged craft and other problems are forgotten over the winter period.

This year we will be running our first Club Working Bee on Sunday 29th May. Our goal is to check all gear for damage so we can plan to get it repaired over winter. Undertake a clean up and identify small and simple projects that we can complete over winter or at the next working bee.

The Working will run from 12-4pm, followed immediately by a boaties and a board/ski meeting, a BBQ and finally the club draw

If you have some time and are keen to help get the preseason started well then we would love to see you there. This is a whole club cleanup, so, many hands make light work!

Boat Licence Course

A Boat Licence Course is being held at Glenelg SLSC on Thursday 26th May. The session will start at 7pm SHARP, cost is $5 for Surf Life Saving Bronze holders (mention your club’s name when booking) or $40 for general public, cash only on the night. Minimum age is 16 and Photo ID must be produced on the night for all attendees (drivers licence, etc).

Having your boat licence is the minimum requirement if you are wishing to complete your IRB Drivers course.

Aussies Wrap-Up

WOW – what a time we had on the Sunshine Coast for Aussies. It was a jam-packed week with competiton spanning 3 beaches – Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba.
The event was very well organised with the planners leaving nothing to chance – even supplying shuttle buses for competitors, officials and spectators for easy transport to the competition areas.
It was definitely an exceptional experience for those who were fortunate enough to attend.

Semaphore was represented by 70 members – 19 of which were competitors in Youth, U17, Open, Masters and Boats.

Our week started on the Saturday with the Youth competition. A big shout out to Josh who was our only competitor in this group. Josh faced the toughest conditions of the whole week (except for the final day) and set the scene for a great week for everyone else. Well done on all of his efforts but especially for finishing in the top 20 for the 2k run.

Sean and Nic both competed in Champ Lifesaver (as they won Gold in the State competition) with Nic finishing 6th in the U17s and Sean finishing 5th in the Open.

Our U17s – Nic, Danny, Sam and Cooper competed in a range of events – surf team, board rescue, taplin, ski relay, board relay (this all on the first day!), ski, board, 2krun, ironman, belt race, and swim.

Some highlights of the U17s:
– the surf team of all 4 boys finished 8th in their swim team heat (the top 6 were taken through to the quarter finals)
– Danny finished 8th in his ski heat and made it through to Round 2
– Nic in his heats finished 9th in the board, 9th in the ironman, 5th in the belt race, 17th in the swim – ALL of which left him just ONE spot away from progressing to the next stage
– Cooper finished 27th in the 2k run and was the only U17 to compete in a beach event
– Danny finished 10th in the swim progressing to the quarter finals
– Sam supported another SA club – Henley by helping them fill a board relay team

Sean was our only Open competitor and competed in the restricted surf race – finishing 16th in the final, board rescue (with Nic) – finishing 5th; just missing out going through to the next round and the board – finishing 16th in his heat. A solid effort considering he was up against some all to familiar names in the surf lifesaving world.

Aaron was our one and only Masters competitor making a stellar effort in the flags. No – he didn’t get any but at least he was there and had a go!!

The Boaties:
After a couple of warm up rows on the Saturday that ultimately served to wash the red dust from the boat and remind us of the power of a shore dump, the carnival started well for Semaphore.

We had the TROGS (220s), JACCOS (160s and Reserve grade) and our Motley Crew (U19 Men) all competing.
The TROGS gained excellent experience in their division completing all three rows in the round robin, with good starts and turns, and everybody staying in the Boat!
The Jaccos were highly competitive in the 160s and Reserve grade. They were very unlucky with the waves coming over the finish line, just missing out on the cuts for both divisions.
Fantastic effort by the Motley Crew who hit a phenomenal wave out on their first race and did well in the three race round robin to make it into the first elimination round. Unfortunately we ran out of legs on the day.

A great experience for all that attended where a lot was learnt ready for us to refine our skills for next season.

– Kerry for doing ALL of the nominations
– Pat for all of his support on the beach
– Shannon, Paige, Bryana and Zoe for supporting all of the competitors every day on the beach and for handling when required
– Cathy and Vicki for taking so many amazing photos
– Damian for shopping for and preparing and cooking an amazing dinner for the whole crew
– Neil, Steve and Mick for the water cover (we felt safe!!!!)
– Glenelg, Henley, Somerton and Christies Beach for great comradery on the beach and supporting SA as a whole
and last but not least:
– Ailsa (Hilary) for the amazing organisation of the whole event for our club. A fantastic effort without which our week would not have been so successful!!

ASRL SA dinner

ASRL-SA Presentation Night

 

Remember the ASRL-SA presentation night is on 21 May at our Club. Aiming for maximum participation from our Club. Doesn’t matter if your not a boatie – great way to meet members of the other clubs

 

SA Annual Cocktail Dinner “Team Navy” at Semaphore Surf Lifesaving Club Saturday 21st May 2016 from 7pm for7.30pm start until 12am.

 

The $80 Cocktail Food and Beverage Package includes a wonderful selection of Finger Food created by our Executive Chef and his team and will be served throughout the night. The drinks package will be from 7 to 11pm  and includes Beer, Sparkling, White Wine, Cider, Juice and Soft Drinks.

 

Dress is Cocktail or for the more adventurous, navy theme.
