Working with Children Checks

The State Government has made legislative changes to strengthen its screening laws, including transitional arrangements for a new working with children check effective from 1 July 2019. The Department of Human Services (DHS) in South Australia is working to communicate these changes to create awareness and educate South Australians on requirements for these new working with children checks.

A Fundraising message from SLSSA

As some of you may be aware, OTR (On The Run) currently provides Surf Life Saving SA with the opportunity to raise donations through their OTRGive program. 1c from every $2 (or 2L of fuel purchased) at any OTR site is donated to a customer’s chosen charitable partner. To date, we have 307 supporters aligned to SLSSA, and we’ve generated $940 in donations back to us. Given that everyone needs fuel for their cars, this is a great opportunity for us to spread the word amongst our members and wider community that we can make a genuine difference to fundraising through our simple everyday actions. You can view our fundraising page here to see the stats in real time:

To get involved, it’s really straight forward:

  1. Download the OTR App on your smart phone
  2. Sign up to the app (and receive a voucher for 1 free coffee when you do)
  3. Select OTR Give inside the app and choose Surf Life Saving SA as your cause

From there, you’re now ready to generate donations every time you spend in store at OTR. When you’re about to make a transaction simply;

  1. Open the OTR app
  2. Select OTR Give
  3. Click “scan & generate donation” to bring a up a barcode for scanning during the checkout process

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

OTR are currently reviewing the partners involved and are now in the process of scaling back the number of organisations that can utilise the platform. From 1stAugust, the number will be reduced to 24 partners. We will remain in the group of 24, but a 2nd review will occur later in the year to reduce the numbers further from there. We’d love to remain in the final group, but at this stage we need to make greater inroads to increasing the number of supporters aligned to us, and subsequently also increasing the usage of the app when our community visit OTR locations.

We’re undertaking some broad communications about this on our Facebook Page, website and E-Newsletter, but I’m also encouraging you to please spread the word amongst your members. We note that OTR Aldinga, Seaford and Christies Beach stores receive a healthy number of OTR Give transactions, and we’d love to see other sites grow their transactions volumes as well.

If we’re all able to start utilising the platform (of course, only necessary if / when we’re buying fuel or other items from OTR stores), then we can start to make a meaningful difference just through the course of our regular everyday actions. It’s also important to note that all of the fuel cards in the Surf vehicles are for BP service stations, and these (usually) are OTR sites. If we can make a conscious effort to fill up with the fuel cards at OTR / BP stores, that will have a huge impact as well.

We’d love to reach 1000 supporters over the next couple of months, eventually with a target to be generating $10,000 / year in donations through the platform in time.
