Seniors Winter Training Camp – Chiton Rocks

With winter training now underway we thought it was time to organise a training camp for all of our seniors (including the 2016/17 U14s).
This is a great team bonding opportunity and a good chance to get some practice in some decent surf.

We have booked Chiton Rocks SLSC for two nights over the weekend of Friday 5thSunday 7th August at a cost of $30 per person per night.
The accommodation area sleeps a maximum of 26 (20 single bunks and 3 doubles).

Confirmation of numbers needs to be given as soon as possible so if you are interested in attending please email Karin Humphrey at kaz412@bigpond.com by Fri 24th June.
The club will invoice members for payment.

As the new season U14s do not yet have their SRC we will also be asking for support from parents and/or anyone else with their Bronze that is keen to help to provide assistance with water cover during the training sessions which are likely to occur Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Depending on the departure time from the club on Friday 5/8 there may also be a brief training session late that afternoon.

Please note – Sunday 7th August is also the club’s AGM so we are asking that all of those attending the camp come back to the club on Sunday afternoon at 3pm to show their support and ensure we get the numbers needed to allow our AGM to proceed.

Pool Rescue State Champs Training Sessions

As has previously been advertised – Pool Rescue State Championships are to be held on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July.
This is the last event of the 2015/16 season and is open to current (15/16) U12s and above.
Details re nominations will be sent out soon.

In order to support all those that are keen to enter gain an understanding of and practice the various races to be held we have organised 3 training sessions at The Parks Recreation and Sports Centre (Cowan Street Angle Park).
These sessions will be held on Saturday 25th June, Saturday 2nd July and Saturday 9th July from 1.303.30pm and will be coached by Trent Bampton and Sean McKenzie.
There will be NO cost to participate in training as this has been fully funded by the club.

We are hoping to have a strong team at Pool Champs this year so come along to the training sessions and see what a great and fun event this is!

Senior Board/Ski/Swim meeting 29th May

We will be holding a meeting this Sunday after the working bee for all people interested in competing in board, ski and swim events in Seniors this coming season. The meeting will discuss when training will commence, training nights, winter kayaking, possible training camps and a whole heap of other information. We urge you to be there as we plan on making some changes this season which will hopefully benefit the whole club in years to come.

The working bee will be from 12-4, the meeting will follow straight after that (with a BBQ for those that helped out for the working bee) and will be followed by the club draw.

Please contact Karin (0403221592) for any more information or to let her know if you can not make the meeting.

There will also be a boaties meeting running at the same time, but please see the post about the boaties meeting for more information

Pool Rescue State Championships – Save the Date

The 2016 Pool Rescue State Championships are to be held on Saturday 16th July and Sunday 17th July (times to be advised) at the State Aquatic Centre, 443 Morphett Road Oaklands Park.

Events in these championships are open to competitors in U12s and above (age group as per the 2015/16 season).

Event and entry details coming soon.

We are keen to gauge the number of members keen to compete as soon as possible so that we can plan accordingly (including specific training sessions).

If you want to compete and/or would like further information please email Karin Humphrey at kaz412@bigpond.com.

Club Working Bee

Previous years has seen us run our Club Working Bee in September near the start of the season. The problem with that is a lot of damaged craft and other problems are forgotten over the winter period.

This year we will be running our first Club Working Bee on Sunday 29th May. Our goal is to check all gear for damage so we can plan to get it repaired over winter. Undertake a clean up and identify small and simple projects that we can complete over winter or at the next working bee.

The Working will run from 12-4pm, followed immediately by a boaties and a board/ski meeting, a BBQ and finally the club draw

If you have some time and are keen to help get the preseason started well then we would love to see you there. This is a whole club cleanup, so, many hands make light work!

Aussies Wrap-Up

WOW – what a time we had on the Sunshine Coast for Aussies. It was a jam-packed week with competiton spanning 3 beaches – Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba.
The event was very well organised with the planners leaving nothing to chance – even supplying shuttle buses for competitors, officials and spectators for easy transport to the competition areas.
It was definitely an exceptional experience for those who were fortunate enough to attend.

Semaphore was represented by 70 members – 19 of which were competitors in Youth, U17, Open, Masters and Boats.

Our week started on the Saturday with the Youth competition. A big shout out to Josh who was our only competitor in this group. Josh faced the toughest conditions of the whole week (except for the final day) and set the scene for a great week for everyone else. Well done on all of his efforts but especially for finishing in the top 20 for the 2k run.

Sean and Nic both competed in Champ Lifesaver (as they won Gold in the State competition) with Nic finishing 6th in the U17s and Sean finishing 5th in the Open.

Our U17s – Nic, Danny, Sam and Cooper competed in a range of events – surf team, board rescue, taplin, ski relay, board relay (this all on the first day!), ski, board, 2krun, ironman, belt race, and swim.

Some highlights of the U17s:
– the surf team of all 4 boys finished 8th in their swim team heat (the top 6 were taken through to the quarter finals)
– Danny finished 8th in his ski heat and made it through to Round 2
– Nic in his heats finished 9th in the board, 9th in the ironman, 5th in the belt race, 17th in the swim – ALL of which left him just ONE spot away from progressing to the next stage
– Cooper finished 27th in the 2k run and was the only U17 to compete in a beach event
– Danny finished 10th in the swim progressing to the quarter finals
– Sam supported another SA club – Henley by helping them fill a board relay team

Sean was our only Open competitor and competed in the restricted surf race – finishing 16th in the final, board rescue (with Nic) – finishing 5th; just missing out going through to the next round and the board – finishing 16th in his heat. A solid effort considering he was up against some all to familiar names in the surf lifesaving world.

Aaron was our one and only Masters competitor making a stellar effort in the flags. No – he didn’t get any but at least he was there and had a go!!

The Boaties:
After a couple of warm up rows on the Saturday that ultimately served to wash the red dust from the boat and remind us of the power of a shore dump, the carnival started well for Semaphore.

We had the TROGS (220s), JACCOS (160s and Reserve grade) and our Motley Crew (U19 Men) all competing.
The TROGS gained excellent experience in their division completing all three rows in the round robin, with good starts and turns, and everybody staying in the Boat!
The Jaccos were highly competitive in the 160s and Reserve grade. They were very unlucky with the waves coming over the finish line, just missing out on the cuts for both divisions.
Fantastic effort by the Motley Crew who hit a phenomenal wave out on their first race and did well in the three race round robin to make it into the first elimination round. Unfortunately we ran out of legs on the day.

A great experience for all that attended where a lot was learnt ready for us to refine our skills for next season.

From the whole Aussies Touring Party huge thanks go out to:
– Kirsty for keeping track of the boat races and ensuring all were in the right spot at the right time,
– Johnno and Weiry for driving a loaded club ute up and towing the board/ski trailer back. Thanks also to Johnno for doing the boat bearings
– Craig for towing the board/ski trailer to the Sunshine Coast
– Kerry for doing ALL of the nominations
– Pat for all of his support on the beach
– Shannon, Paige, Bryana and Zoe for supporting all of the competitors every day on the beach and for handling when required
– Cathy and Vicki for taking so many amazing photos
– Damian for shopping for and preparing and cooking an amazing dinner for the whole crew
– Neil, Steve and Mick for the water cover (we felt safe!!!!)
– Glenelg, Henley, Somerton and Christies Beach for great comradery on the beach and supporting SA as a whole
and last but not least:
– Ailsa (Hilary) for the amazing organisation of the whole event for our club. A fantastic effort without which our week would not have been so successful!!

Aussies updates

Training times this week
Tonight (Monday) skis 4:45pm
Tuesday boards 4:45pm
Wednesday skis 5:30pm (be ready as I’ll be coming straight from uni)
Friday boards 4:45pm
Sunday if weather and conditions permit surf training

Monday 11/4 Skis 4:45pm

Tuesday 12/4 Boards 4:45pm followed by trailer loading

Wednesday 13/4 club swimming 7pm.

Just a reminder that the trailer will be loaded Tuesday 12th April from 6pm. All gear must be tied down personally. All boards and skis will be secured using board straps NOT rubber tubes. Any eskies, chairs or other gear that wants to be sent with the trailers will need to be tied down (don’t just drop and run).

If you can not make trailer loading please ensure your gear is at the club, board in a cover and fin removed with tie downs on cover ready to go (and let someone know).

All competition gear takes priority. If there is room after that then surfboards, training boards for non competitors or nipper boards from younger siblings can then be loaded. Again fins out if possible.

Please let us know what extra gear will be taken ASAP. Other clubs may need spots, so if you are bringing surfboards, nipper boards or plan on buying a board and bringing it home please let us know.

The board and boat trailers leave early Wednesday 13th. If it isn’t on it won’t be going.

Senior State Champs Wrap-Up

Day 2 and 3 of Senior State Champs were held down at South Port over the weekend.
We had a huge 2 days of competition that sees Semaphore sitting 9th (provisionally) on the points table with R&R Champs still to come.

We had some great results including 6 medals:
* U17 Male Surf Team – Nic Schulz, Danny Humphrey, Cooper Lienert and Sam Squeo – SILVER
* U19 Male Surf Team – Luke Zille, Kyle Thomas, Nic Schulz and Danny Humphrey – SILVER
* U17 Male Ski Relay – Nic Schulz, Danny Humphrey and Sam Squeo – BRONZE
* U14 Male Swim – Connor Tunbridge – BRONZE
* Open Male Board – Sean McKenzie – BRONZE
* Over 24 Male Restricted Surf Race – Sean McKenzie – SILVER

As well as this we had over 15 top 6 finishes all of which earnt the club valuable points.

A big shout out to those that came down to predominantly compete to help fill teams and/or to handle for events such as the belt races – without this support some events would not have been entered; Laurence Fletcher, Nick Penny, Rhys Krauter, Luke Zille, Shannon Harris, Trent Bampton, Michael Williams.

The Seniors are not a large group of competitors with the girls a very small number within this. All of these girls deserve individual accolades for their determination, commitment and dedication to the club:
– Zoe Schulz – the only U15 female who attends the majority of training sessions and is gaining more and more confidence in competition.
– Bianca Williams – the only U17 female who competed in all of the water events in her age group and competed up in both individual and team Open events.
– Bryana Bisset – our U19 ski paddler who also competed in several team events to ensure these could go ahead.
– Shannon Harris – an U19 competitor who supported as handler for belt races and helped fill Open teams. When Shannon wasn’t competing she was a huge support in the managing of the competitors and could often be seen running down the beach carrying someone’s board to an event or holding everyone’s gear while they competed. It’s this behind the scenes support that is so essential to the whole team.
– Paige Purdie – our only Open female competitor. Paige gives just about every event a go and showed some awesome skills on her board this weekend.

Thanks to all of those other ‘behind the scenes’ people whose support is very much appreciated: Kerry Schulz for doing the nominations for the WHOLE competition group, Greg McKenzie and Craig Lienert for always being available to tow trailers to/from carnivals, all of our officials coordinated by Raelene Donnell (Semaphore always made their quota), our photographers – Ailsa Bisset, Vicki Harris and Richard Martin, Pat Larven for supporting wherever he was needed, Daryle Rigney (supported by Bruce Moseley) for being the U14/15s Team Manager, Trent Bampton for being our swim coach and Sean McKenzie for coaching skis, boards and the U14s and being a mentor to all of the older juniors and our senior group.

Well done to Zac Buck and Lindsey Ould who were named Semaphore’s U14 Lifesavers of the Year – well deserved amongst some very tough competition!
Our U14 group as a whole need to be congratulated. This season saw a big change with them only able to compete at Senior carnivals – definitely a tough ask! There is no doubt that our crew stepped up and didn’t let this deter them – something to be very proud of.

With a big number of juniors heading into seniors in the next few years (a few can be seen in the photo below) we are sure our senior competition group is only going to go from strength to strength.

Now – AUSSIES!!!! With only a little over 3 weeks to go until we head to the Sunshine Coast there is no time for rest.
Training is still going – keep an eye on the Facebook pages for days/times. Please remember this training is for anyone that wants to keep working on their fitness and skills not just those competing in QLD.

Thanks for a great 2015/16 season!!
