We need your help!

Help Semaphore SLSC in its bid to have an accessible beach for all – Have your say!

With the support of former Charles Sturt City Cr Gerard Ferrao, Semaphore SLSC was successful in its
push to have Council allocate $50,000 towards the design of an accessible beach access ramp on the
existing Point Malcolm boardwalk.

NOW FOR THE EXCITING NEWS! Council has allocated $150,000 in its 2023/2024 Draft Annual
Business Plan for the construction of that ramp, which would truly make our wonderful beach
accessible for all. Semaphore SLSC already has infrastructure such as beach access wheelchairs and
beach matting. The ramp is one of the last pieces of the puzzle.

Not only will the ramp be available to people in wheelchairs, but also all members of the community
with mobility issues. This is a really exciting possibility for our community and is in keeping with
Semaphore SLSC’s broader inclusion program.

But wait there’s more! Semaphore SLSC has been successful in its bid for Council to commit $50,000
to the design of a Changing Places and DDA Amenities. If successful these new facilities would
replace existing amenities, which are non-compliant.

It is not a given that these two Bids will go ahead. Council needs to see community support for the
projects. We need your help. Below is the information relating to the Bids, as well as a link to the
Submission page. Please take the time to make a submission. Please take the time to share with
your family, friends and organisations.
Our inclusion motto is “If we can, we should.” Let’s make our beach what it should be, accessible for
all.
Regards,
Kate Newman

Semaphore SLSC – Changing Places & DDA Amenities – Design
Bid ID PBB-00001705
Within the 2022/23 financial year, the need for a changing places facility at Point Malcolm has been
identified through both the Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club and members of the public due to the
recent inclusion of inclusive beach equipment at the location. In addition it has been identified that
current DDA public amenities (part of the SSLSC Building) are non compliant due to size and access
requirements, in addition the current public amenities are not sufficient in volume for the large user
base at Point Malcolm Reserve. As such, the recommendation for design of a new Changing Places

Facility at the Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club which includes provisions for new public compliant
DDA Access Amenities and Ambulant Facilities have been proposed for the 2023/24 Financial Year.

We need you!

Season 2022/23 may be over but preparations for season 2023/24 are already underway! One of the most important things that happen first is the nomination and election of the Board of Management and other Club Officer Roles. Getting the right people to step up and nominate is crucial for the ongoing success of our club.

Do you think you might have something to offer that will benefit all? Is there an area of the club where you think you can help make a positive difference? It may seem daunting at first but if you ask anyone who has held one of these roles at the club before what the experience was like the answer would overwhelmingly be positive! There are plenty of people with past experience to help you grow into the role and you will have all the support and training that you might need to help you be successful.

If there is a role that you are interested in, email our Secretary, Alli, via secretary@semaphoreslsc.com.au and she can give you some more information about each role. Talking to current office holders about the role is also a great way to find out more and everyone is always happy to share their experiences.

The greatest asset our club has is its members and we can only grow and improve if people are willing to step up and give it a go. Have a think about how you could help and bravely step forward and put your hand up for what could be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life!

Make sure you come along to our AGM, Sunday June 25th 4pm. Our club draw will also be held that afternoon instead of the Thursday prior.
