Local lads do our Club proud at Coolangatta

The weekend of 15th/16th saw a number of members travel up to the Gold Coast to take on the Iconic Coolangatta Gold, an endurance Iron Man race based off the movie of the same name from 1984. Saturday was the short course race comprising of a 14.1km Ski paddle, 2.1km beach run, 2.5km ocean swim, 6.1km Board Paddle finishing with a 7.1km Beach run and Nic Schulz took the race on as an U19. He executed a great consistent race placing 13th out of the U19s and 17th overall for the day. He was the fastest South Australian to complete the course.

Sunday saw Willis Leirnert complete the Youth Challenge comprising a 500m beach run, 400m swim, 500m Board paddle and finishing with a 500m run. At just 12 years of age Wilis raced a great race against competitors from some of the big clubs from Queensland and was right in the middle of the field. He really enjoyed the experience of racing against some of the best competitors from across the country.

We also had our open team compete in the long course event on Sunday. The team of Laurence Fletcher, Sean McKenzie, Nick Penny and Leigh Pilkington completed the grueling event in a competitive position of 7th place, in conditions that many have said to have been the toughest they have raced in. Laurence completed the 23km ski leg while battling into a strong head wind for 17 of the 23km. Sean had to swim in rough conditions that made it hard to get into a good rhythm, and saw him start to get hypothermia by the end of the 3.5km swim. Nick Penny completed the 6.1km board paddle in a very competitive time while battling winds that were turning more cross shore as the event went on. To finish the race Leigh completed the run after just overcoming a knee injury weeks before the race, and wasn’t sure if it would cause him difficulties while racing.

Well done to all of our local representatives.  You’ve done Semaphore proud!

Semaphore Members set to challenge themselves at Coolangatta Gold

Willis Lienert is set to become the youngest member of Semaphore Surf Lifesaving Club ever to compete at Coolangatta Gold, one of the most challenging endurance races in surf sports. 12 year old Lienert will take part in the Youth Division.

Lienert will be joined by several other members. Sean McKenzie, Laurence Fletcher, Nick Penny and Leigh Pilkington will compete in the Open Long Course event. Nic Schulz will tackle the short course event in the U/19 division. The seniors have spent the winter months training on their boards and skis, racking up plenty of kilometres in bad weather and on many occasions in the dark. A typical week of training has included more than 60km on the board and skis, 5-6km swimming 5 times a week and 3 hours of running. Willis has been training hard in the pool.

Coolangatta Gold takes place on October 15th and 16th, with Lienert competing on the 2nd day. The Youth Division race includes a 300m run, 400m swim leg, 400m run, 500m board leg and run to the finish line. With the amount of preparation Lienert has done for this event he’s going to be in great shape for the upcoming surf season. His involvement is likely to inspire other juniors at the Club to give the iconic event on the Gold Coast a go in future years.

Juniors Weekly Update

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for getting the season off to a great start. A reminder we are still looking for volunteers to help with the Under 6 & 7’s (sand crabs) and Under 9’s age groups. If you can assist in any way please let me know.  It’s a great way to be involved in your child’s development and an opportunity to give back to the Club that will give so much to your child.

                    nippers-1 nippers-2

We have been a great fundraising opportunity coming up at Westfield West Lakes – Thursday October 13 and Friday October 14. We will have a Jet Ski on display and would like to see if we can roster people on for a couple of hours to rattle the cans and raise some money along the way. I would like to see if any of our R&R team members would be available on either day to give a demonstration.  This invitation is extended to all club members and we would greatly appreciate it if we could staff our display on both days.  Westfield has generously come on board for two years as a major sponsor of the club.  We get the chance to be on display to the community for these two days, raising our profile and much needed funds.  Please wear your club colours.  Contact me if you can assist in any way.
