R&R Training – Suspended

R&R Training is suspended for the foreseeable future. Given the close proximity that R&R competitors need to operate at as well as the possibility of Covid-19 transmission among unvaccinated children under 12 it has been decided to suspend both 5 person and 2 person R&R Training for the present time.

We will let you know when or if they will recommence this season.

Largs Bay Swim Centre – New Club Sponsor

We welcome Largs Bay Swim Center as a Bronze Sponsor of Semaphore SLSC. Many of our Club’s members have enjoyed a long relationship with the Center and this has lead to this great business coming on board as official Club Sponsors.

Many of our Nippers currently enjoy the learn to swim classes with some already graduated to the squad programs and as such have joined the majority of our Youth and Senior competitors.

In fact we would urge any Nipper wanting to be successful in surf competition, if not currently undertaking learn to swim or squad sessions, to do so. It is one of the most important skills in Surf Life Saving. Just because you can stay afloat in a pool doesn’t mean you can complete a 150m open water proficiency swim.

We even have a Club swim nights as part of the centre’s Aussies Squad on Wednesday nights from 7pm, or once graduated from the learn to swim program we have a squad for our Nippers simply to assist in building endurance for surf swimming.

Contact the Centre on 8341 6062 to ask about the right session for you or your children.

Covid Update 20 Nov

 As highlighted in the last update, Government direction can change quickly and dramatically. Accordingly, we will soon be returning to similar restrictions that were in place before Thursday’s COVID lock down.

So, to reinforce where we are as a Club effective midnight Saturday 21 November 2020 until advised otherwise:

Sport and Education

  • Club gym will remain closed (this will be reviewed early next week);
  • Change rooms and showers are closed (other than essential toilet use);
  • All training activities are suspended with no Club equipment to be removed from the Club for personal use;
  • Carnival events scheduled for remainder of November 2020 will not go ahead as planned; and
  • Face to face proficiencies and training activities (i.e. Bronze Course) are postponed.

Bar and Bistro next week will continue to trade however:

  • Bistro will take place Thursday and Friday nights with bookings essential and a 10 person maximum per booking in place;
  • Club hours will change on Saturday 28 November 2020 (4pm to 8pm);
  • Club capacity will be significantly reduced with the reintroduction of the 4m2 rule;
  • No standing consumption of alcohol (inside and outside);
  • Seated dining only; and
  • All members and non-members must sign in on entry and on exit

For further clarity, this weekend as the lock down remains in place on Saturday the bar will not be open and no training will occur. The bar will however be open from 4pm Sunday 22 November 2020 under the rules highlighted above.

In the interest of public safety, roving patrols with reduced numbers have been authorised for Saturday and will occur as roving patrols only for all future patrols until advised otherwise. Club Captain Andrew Edwards will coordinate this with individuals as required.

Further targeted information will be provided through our social media, website and text/email facilities to keep you updated. For further SA Government Restrictions information https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/recovery

Stay safe and stay connected.

Training Patrols

The First Training Patrol of the season was well attended by a range of people training for both SRC and Bronze, some using it as a refresher and others starting from scratch. The group concentrated on The Human Body, Defibrillation and basic oxygen and Radio Operation as well as waterwork.  4 out of the 6 Patrols will have a trainer to support our commitment to getting members qualified.

If interested in completing any qualifications this season please contact Jennie on instructor@semaphoreslsc.com.au

Training News

SRC & Bronze Medallion Training Last Weekend

Last weekend (5th to 7th of October) approximately 30 of our young members, undertook their SRC & Bronze Top-Up training.  In what must surely be record numbers in one intake, the students & trainers committed to 3 days of long and intensive training both in & out of the water.  Whilst the weather was pleasant outside of the water, feedback was that each of the students now understand what it is like to be a Polar Bear!!

As a club, Semaphore is extremely proud that such a large percentage of our junior/youth members are transitioning from competition to patrolling members.  Given we primarily exist as a Community Volunteer Service Organisation, such large numbers augurs well for the coming years.

Many thanks to Heather Eckert as the principal trainer for the three days. Heather was ably and gratefully assisted by several volunteers handling water cover and other tasks.  Thanks also to Jennie Charlton and her team for helping co-ordinate such a monumental achievement.  The feedback from all the students was extremely positive both on the training itself as well as our new Training Facilities.

Well done everyone!

Junior Weekly Report

10 DAYS TO GO

It’s been an eventful week with lots of little bits and pieces finally going in to place.

At the start of any season there are many newcomers across all age groups, and I’m sure we tried and true members can all remember starting and being very unfamiliar with Surf Life Saving practices so if you see anyone looking lost or not sure what to do next reach out and lend a helping hand.  Semaphore Surf Life Saving Club has long been known as a Family Club and we want to ensure that that tradition continues.

Nipper Facebook Group

The SSLSC Nippers will have their own Facebook Group this year, which will hopefully launch with the start of the season, making it a one stop shop for all Nipper related information. Keep a look out for more news here.
