If you have any issues there will be a person available to assist you upstairs on Saturday before training.

Parental Supervision during Training

Whilst it is a requirement of the Semaphore Surf Club for you, or a nominated guardian, to oversee your child’s fun on the beach during training, its also a great opportunity for you to interact with your child and other parents in a great community activity.  Semaphore has long been referred to as a Family Club, and we believe that Surf Life Saving is a fulfilling family experience for all.

Uniting SA – Christmas Appeal

In a bid to help less fortunate families we are asking for all our Nippers to support the Uniting SA Christmas Appeal.  Please drop a small non perishable gift into the box by the Christmas/Rescue Board.  All donations will be delivered to Uniting SA on Friday 14th December.

Ist Junior Carnival – Glenelg  **UPDATE**

The first Junior Carnival is on this Sunday (18th Nov) at Glenelg.  All nominations have been entered.  Only the nominated juniors entered into the Event System will be allowed to compete.

The undated events schedule is now available (see below), and a carnival time table will be distributed via your Age Group manager on the day as usual.

As the events start at 8:30am we are requesting all participants to be on the beach at 8am.

Please note – that there is no RnR or March Past scheduled for this carnival, and no points will be awarded to clubs.  As such while flags and sprints will be run as usual, Water Events will be conducted as 2 rounds with all participants having the opportunity to participate in both rounds if they want to.  Board Rescue and Iron Person take a bit longer so they have been scheduled either just before lunch or at the end of the day and will probably only see 1 round completed but will most likely run over time, this means that we need to be sure that the kids still get time to eat appropriately.

Warning – Parking will most likely be an issue. There will be allot of space dedicated in normal parking areas to storage for the international teams visiting for The World Surf Life Saving Championships scheduled for the same week. http://www.lifesaving2018.com

Port Christmas Pageant – Come and join the fun!

We will be entering a float at this year’s Port Adelaide Christmas Pageant, which is being held on Saturday November 17th in Port Adelaide.  It would be great to have as many Juniors and Seniors marching as possible.

We understand that its the night before the first Carnival but we are expected to be finished by 7pm.

We will be towing one Surf Boat and will take up to ten juniors in the boat. Names will be taken on a first come first served basis but with priority placed on the younger children getting preference over the older kids.

We would love to see any SRC’s and Bronzies in uniform to assist in supervising while the floats are in motion!!!

Sorry mums/dad’s with younger kids your attendance will also be required!!

Dress for the day is:

  • Semaphore Skull Caps for all juniors and Semaphore training Shirts for all juniors that have them
  • Patrol hats and shirts for seniors and patrolling members.
  • If you are a non patrolling parent please wear any Semaphore gear that you have
  • Optional tinsel and Christmas decorations – that’s up to you.

More info will be supplied soon.

Ist Junior Carnival – Glenelg

The first Junior Carnival is on Sunday 18th November at Glenelg.  Next week your Age Group Managers will be requesting nominations for this Carnival.  It is important that you consider your response as this year SLSSA will not allow late entries. Only the nominated juniors entered into the Event System will be allowed to compete. Conversely if you nominate and don’t show you may adversely effect a team event.  The events scheduled for this Carnival are shown below.

** Update** It may be likely that there will be no RnR competition at this carnival and That MachPast will be moved to the end of the Day.  It has been identified that the ability for competitors and there supporting parents to be on thebeach at the required times are a potential issue.  There will be allot of space dedicated in normal parking areas to storage for the international teams visiting for The World Surf Life Saving Championships scheduled for the same week. http://www.lifesaving2018.com

R and R Training

RnR Training is back this Saturday for all Nippers from Under 11 to Under 13. There are 2 time slots that are available

Before Training 11am   OR   After Training 3pm

Meet Coaches Raelene and John at the usual muster spot just before these times.

Whats RnR you ask – R&R is a competition based on the simulated rescue and resuscitation of a patient.  It combines resuscitation skills, marching and drill with teams judged against set criteria.  There are RnR Competitions at every carnival and there is a State Carnival scheduled for 16th Feb 2019, at which medals are awarded.

Want to know what its all about come and have a look

March Past Training

Straight after RnR Training Match Past training is on.  Meet Coach Mandy at the usual Muster Spot around 12:55pm to head to the Beach for March Past.  March Past is open for all competing Nippers from Under 8 to Under 13’s.

Again a March Past competition is held at all carnivals and at State Championships for medals.

The March Past is an example of the significant impact returned servicemen had on the development of surf lifesaving and competition in the early days. In past years, clubs were not able to compete at carnivals unless they fielded a March Past team or someone marching with the club standard.  March Past maintains the growth of club spirit, mateship, the carrying of the flag, the club colours, consolidating the trade mark of surf lifesaving in Australia and around the world.

March Past competition provides a platform for discipline and club spirit throughout surf clubs of Australia, consolidating its long and successful history and future.

Semaphore SLSC Media – Carnival Photographers (no experience necessary)

SLSSA have relaxed the maximum of 5 Club Media Personnel (photographers) this allows us to spread the responsibility for taking photos at carnivals. In response to this I would like to ask for nominations from among parents of all age groups.  This way we can pass a camera and vest from group to group to group to accredited people to take photos for your Age Group.

Benefits include being able to be inside the competition area during events, availability of more photos of each Age Group to display at the post Carnival wrap ups and during the season, as well as more for parents to access of their own child.

No previous experience is required, what is required is a Police Clearance (a free one can be organised through the club), a Club Media Form and a short training session with Steph Breden on how the cameras work and your away.

Email Steph on juniorsec@semaphoreslsc.com.au or see me at training.

Training News

SRC & Bronze Medallion Training Last Weekend

Last weekend (5th to 7th of October) approximately 30 of our young members, undertook their SRC & Bronze Top-Up training.  In what must surely be record numbers in one intake, the students & trainers committed to 3 days of long and intensive training both in & out of the water.  Whilst the weather was pleasant outside of the water, feedback was that each of the students now understand what it is like to be a Polar Bear!!

As a club, Semaphore is extremely proud that such a large percentage of our junior/youth members are transitioning from competition to patrolling members.  Given we primarily exist as a Community Volunteer Service Organisation, such large numbers augurs well for the coming years.

Many thanks to Heather Eckert as the principal trainer for the three days. Heather was ably and gratefully assisted by several volunteers handling water cover and other tasks.  Thanks also to Jennie Charlton and her team for helping co-ordinate such a monumental achievement.  The feedback from all the students was extremely positive both on the training itself as well as our new Training Facilities.

Well done everyone!
