Communicating to you in 2014

Getting the word out about what’s going on at the club is a big job. We have a lot going on! Just like all the great work that gets done by volunteers around the club it happens through no small effort of the people involved. This year we are trying to take the communications at the club to a new level. We want to build on the great work of the previous years and make sure that we don’t hear the words “I didn’t know that was on” come from anyone. Ambitious I know. To that end I am enlisting the help of all who are willing and able to take ownership of our communications and join me in forming the club communicators group.

At the moment we use a number of channels to get the message out. Semaphoreslsc.com.au, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Mailchimp, Surfcom, SMS and standing on a chair and shouting. Some methods are more effective than others but if you take a channel away you reduce the amplitude of the message you are pushing. We already have a group of people who have been posting to our channels over the last couple of years, this year we want to add to the coordination of that and reduce the barriers for the different sections of the club in getting their message out.

If you have previously been frustrated because “you didn’t know that was on” or if you are interested in being part of this new coordinated communications machine, please come to our SSLSC comms group meeting on Thursday August 7 at 630pm. If you can’t make it but you are keen nonetheless, talk to me, Heather Sibley, Karin Humphrey, Georgia Robbins or Sean McKenzie to find out how you can participate.

2014 Youth Development Camp Wrap Up

Congratulations to Bryana Bisset and Tyson Sarunic who were selected to represent Semaphore at the 2014 ‘Be Active’ SLSSA Youth Development Camp.
This camp was conducted outback in the Flinders Ranges at Edeowie Station (near Wilpena Pound) from Monday 7th July to Friday 11th July.
The Senior Surf Sports Committee recognise Bryana and Tyson as future leaders of our club and attendance at this camp will encourage and strengthen their skills in teamwork, leadership and overall personal development.
Well done Bryana and Tyson!
Please keep reading to hear all about the camp from Bryana and Tyson’s perspective. Also, check out the photos of the camp and the amazing Flinders Ranges.

From Bryana: –
I have just returned from a great week at Edeiowe station, near Hawker in The Flinders Ranges on a Youth Development camp through surf life saving.
There was 18 participants from various SA clubs. We all travelled by mini bus on Monday and returned Friday.
Our trip included a range of team bonding exercises, including climbing St Mary’s peak as a team, a Gorge walk through Wilpena pound, cooking meals, scavenger hunt activities, camp fire songs, lessons on Eco surf, fire building and cleaning dishes.
My highlights of the trip were; conquering St Mary’s Peak as it was an amazing view and accidently getting the bus bogged! We pulled together as a team to get it out.
The camp gets many of the participants out of their comfort zones while exploring new surroundings. Having great weather was a bonus as well as receiving Surf rescue jackets.
Overall I highly recommend people to go on the camp as it is an experience of a life time, where memories won’t be forgotten and new friends are made.

From Tyson: –
For the first week of the July school holidays a group of young life savers from various different clubs went on a five day camp in the Flinders Ranges, where we learnt all about teamwork and leadership.
We got to climb the highest peak and there were lots of other activities that got us to grow and bond as a team.
I thought the highlight of the camp was just meeting new people and being able to get through hard physical and mental challenges with each other. The start of the week for some people was a bit awkward as not everyone knew each other and talking on a personal level straight away was tricky. Through the week I think everyone became friends and were able to talk to each other without feeling awkward. We had to be self sufficient for most of the week including cooking and cleaning. Some of the things we got to do were hiking, climbing and team building activities.
I would definitely recommend this camp as l got to learn leadership skills, learn how to cope being out of my comfort zone and be kilometres away from the closest beach with a bunch of people l now consider new friends.
Thank you Semaphore for nominating me!
