Today, we recognise our very own Club Patrol Captain Andrew Edwards for his nominations for a 2023Service to CommunityAward in the City of Port Adelaide Enfield and a 2023 Citizen of the Year Award in the City of Charles Sturt Australia Day Awards.
The awards allow local Councils to recognise and appreciate the service, commitment, effort and achievements of individuals and organisations to enhance community spirit and pride in our City.
Ex-President, Paul Breden wrote in his nomination for Andrew:
“Andrew was nominated for the awards due to his tireless support of our community through life saving services (Semaphore SLSC). Andrew joined Semaphore in 2010, patrolled for 10 years and has lead our Semaphore SLSC patrol team for the last 4 years, using his professionalism and good character to protect and keep our community safe.
Andrew’s service to the community is incredible with his lead by example approach to surf patrols and working with and supporting our life savers. His commitment is part of what makes our beaches and community a safer place. He has worked especially hard to champion recognition of members, ensuring club awards are up to date (i.e patrol hours milestone, service awards etc), and instilling a feeling of belonging and worth for many of our club members. Everyone has a role to play and Andrew is great at finding what that is and encouraging others to participate.
He arranges club events to keep members motivated and happy, BBQs, workshops, activities, even held a sleep over for youth members to encourage comradery (but definitely not sleep). Andrew sees all facets of volunteering and harnesses them, service, commitment, reliability, respect, friendship and fun. This has grown our patrolling numbers and also seen members lost to the club return and find their passion again in surf.
Andrew has also raised the professionalism of our operations with his leadership and vision for our Rescue Ready Facility. The facility is genuinely state of the art and would rival any emergency service (professional or volunteer) for its layout, safety and efficiency. Semaphore is able to deploy Vehicles, Inshore Rescue Boats and other rescue water craft in under 5 minutes (from unlocking the door) 24/7 proving our facility is living up to its name.
He has worked with our Chief Instructor and Trainers to ensure all patrolling members are appropriately supported with training, and given the opportunity to learn new skills and fill specific roles on patrols, this has increased flexibility and will longer term take pressure of specialised operators such as IRB drivers.
As mentioned, Andrew takes his role as Club Captain and Board Member very seriously. He is a role model for all members (young and old) joining the club, leads by example and empowers people to do their roles and be better, he is an example of everything our movement is about. Even since his own children have moved out of the Surf Lifesaving Community he has continued to contribute, going from strength to strength with a passion and commitment second to none.”
Unfortunately Andrew missed out on receiving the City of Port Adelaide’s 2023Service to CommunityAward on Monday, fingers crossed he is successful today at the City of Charles Sturt Australia Day Awards for the 2023 Citizen of the Year Award. Good luck Drewie, we are all very proud of you! Thank you also to Alli Bampton and Paul Breden for the nominations in the first place!

The last officials course for the season is being held on Wednesday 8th February at Surf House SA, West Beach 6:30-8pm.
We are in desperate need of some more volunteers who are prepared to train and be officials for Semaphore SLSC! Surf Carnivals cannot go ahead without us providing this critical role and we run the risk of not being able to compete as a club if we don’t provide enough officials.
This may be the perfect way for you to contribute to the club and the bonus is you don’t have to get wet!
Or email surf.sports@surflifesavingsa.com.au or phone (08) 8354 6900

Two public accessible Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) have been installed at the Club, one by the front door and one by the door into the Rescue Ready Facility. They are registered with SA Ambulance so if someone calls 000 they will be directed straight to assistance.
As qualified patrolling members are not at the club 24/7, the investment in public accessible AED’s was a good initiative to undertake and may just help save a life! The club was lucky enough to secure a grant through the RAA Grassroots Program to fund the purchase and installation. so a big thank you goes to RAA!
Let your friends and family know that the AED’s are there just in case an emergency arises.
A massive thank you to RAA for their great support!
Don’t forget!! The next Junior Carnival for U8- U13 is this Sunday 22nd January at Glenelg! Make sure you read the program, know the schedule and talk to your AGM if you have any questions.
Remember to bring your bathers, club skull cap, high vis top, hat, sun safe top, towel, plenty of sunscreen, water, food and all of your energy, effort and smiles!
See you there! Go Semaphore SLSC!

The Board of Management (BOM) would like to put out a call out for members interested in being involved in a Sub-Committee tasked with undertaking a review of Semaphore SLSC’s current membership pricing structure. The aim will be to put forward a proposal to the BOM on what changes should be made to the membership categories and associated pricing, if accepted, then these changes will be applied from the beginning of the 2023/24 season. The brief from the BOM is quite open ended, with some of the issues to potentially be considered:
· Potential for user pays structure around surf competition fees.
· Membership categories, age groups, competition status, family membership, social membership etc.
· Potential for considering volunteer activities in membership structure.
The committee would meet 2-3 times across Feb-Apr, with recommendation at end of April. If you are interested in participating, then please send a message to club treasurer, Brad Clee, by email Treasurer@Semaphoreslsc.com.au
Are you someone who has an interest in numbers and understanding how the club’s operations work? Then you may be interested in becoming the club’s next Club Treasurer! At the end of this season, Brad will be stepping aside from the Treasurer role he has held for 5 years. He ideally would like to be able to hand the role over to someone who is fresh, keen to work through a range of experiences and is looking forward to the club’s exciting future.
If you feel you might have any interest in this area, then please give Brad a call (0475075822) to organise a time to catch up at the club to discuss what’s involved.

The Board of Management (BOM) would like to inform members that effective from January 19th, a series of price increases will be implemented across the bar and bistro products. Unfortunately, with the club facing rising cost pressures across all areas of operation, it is essential that our prices increase to ensure the club remains financially viable.
In addition, the club will be implementing an EFTPOS charge on all purchases across the bar, or through the new Me&u table ordering application, where the payment method is by card. It was determined to be preferable to recover these rising banking costs on a user pays basis by an EFTPOS fee, rather than further raise the prices across the board which would impact those who pay in cash.
Thursday 19th January – Bar open from 5:00 pm with bistro open for meals from 6:00pm – Club Draw $400.00
