Club working bee/stocktake 30th April 2017

The club is still in a bit of a mess from nipper states and we have a few things that are in need of some maintenance, so what better chance to get this all done and many hands make light work. Sunday the 30th April will be our annual working bee from 11am.

We are also looking to do a stocktake on all club equipment, including uniforms and all food and drinks as our financial year finishes at the end of April.

As we charge towards our rebuild in early 2018 we would prefer to keep our repair costs at a minimum to ensure we are in a strong financial position heading into the rebuild. There are a number of items around the club that require minor repairs and maintenance so people with varying skills (or no skills) are appreciated, even if you are just pushing a broom or counting items around the club.

The club will of course be providing a bbq and a few drinks to thank everyone for their assistance. We will soon develop a list of things that need to be done, to help people prepare for the day

Volunteer Functions Coordinator

The club is seeking a new functions coordinator to lead us into the rebuild in January 2018. Our current manager is having to step down from this role as their professional job has increased in hours and he no longer has time to complete the tasks.

Some of the roles that this position or team will be responsible for include:

  • Responding to enquiries for functions and venue hire (currently 3 to 4 new email or phone enquiries per week)
  • Coordinating the delivery of both club and private functions, conferences, and other events.
  • Work closely with the Kitchen and Bar staff
  • Forecast and discuss stock requirements for functions
  • Liaising with club members about facility use for training etc
  • Booking Security as appropriate
  • Reviewing and proposing ways to maximise income whilst balancing the need to provide a great community service club for our members
  • Manage rosters & labour costs for functions to meet budget.
  • Communicating with bookkeeper about invoicing customers
  • Reviewing finalised payments

We prefer people who possess the following skills and attributes, but can be flexible to the right person/people:

  • Experience within a customer service or hospitality environment
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • Actively being able to problem solve
  • Outstanding communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to work pro-actively under pressure
  • Maintain and build relationships with many stakeholders
  • A vision to grow the operation from its current level.

This role will appeal to individuals who see the potential our facility has to be
fully utilized and deliver an economic benefit to maximize our capability to
safely patrol the beach whilst providing excellent competition equipment and
affordability to our members.
The successful person will be given a comprehensive handover and ongoing
support (Which includes support and knowledge from our professional staff).

Please submit your application, including a current CV and a covering
letter to the Treasurer@semaphoreslsc.com.au

The Surf Life Saving Club Rebuilding Program

Over the past 15 years you would have noticed many clubs have undergone major refurbishment or rebuilding.  This has been made possible by the current funding arrangement involving the State Government, local councils and Surf Lifesaving SA where the development costs are shared on  a 56/33/11% basis respectively.

Funding from the State Government is now available for Semaphore to undergo a refurbishment and the Club’s Building Committee is working on getting the detailed design work, relevant council building approvals, tendering process etc underway in order to commence physical work in early 2016 in line with the Board of Management’s proposed timeline.  The initial expectations are that the building works will cost around $1.8m with the Club to fund 11% of that.

Works upstairs will include relocating the internal stairs with a new entry point in the eastern part of the club, an upgrading of the toilets, the removal of the dividing wall to make one single open area, and new sliding doors to replace the windows that face out onto the balcony.  Downstairs work will include significant structural changes to make better use of the space which will result in a new first aid room and a well overdue upgrade of the change room facilities.

As the project proceeds information will be provided to members to keep you up to date.  Currently, the architects that the club has engaged have commenced developing the detailed design work with the expectation that a first draft will be available for viewing and feedback from members within a few weeks.

On another note, at the time of writing this, it is expected the deed of funding with the Commonwealth Government for the new shed facility will be signed by Surf Lifesaving SA by the end of the week.  This will release the funding and allow Owen Richards and his team from Blubuilt (the successful tenderers) to commence building in the not too distant future.  Included in the funding agreement will be a new PWC (jetski) and an ATV which SLSSA is currently sourcing.

Certainly some exciting times ahead for the Club.  If you have any fundraising ideas please feel free to share them.  We are all in this together.  Many hands make light work.

Regards,

Pat Hansen

Have a happy Easter.

Don’t forget Semaphore Balcony Sundays

Sunday April 9th is the last Semaphore Balcony Sunday for the year so come on down for cheap drinks, free sausage sizzle, live music and best of all, quality time with all your club mates.

Get on Board, become a board member.

We will be seeking a new Treasurer at our next Annual General Meeting, after stepping into the role at short notice our current Treasurer, Peter Adams has taken on a new and demanding role in his paid employment and will not be continuing next season.

This is a great chance to work on the Board of your club in a vital role to lead us into a new economic era as we undergo significant redevelopment which will create many opportunities to strengthen our business financially. We have a strong and committed Finance Committee to support the role and our current Treasurer, Peter will work with the new incumbent as they take over. If you believe you have the skills to take on this vital role please contact myself or Peter to discuss what it involves and what it can offer and learn a bit about what keeps your club running.

We also encourage any member considering taking a more proactive role in the club to start thinking now about which board position you could bring skills and knowledge to. Each year all board positions become vacant and the existing board member then reapplied for the role should it work in with their life. Talk to any board member if you just want to know what is involved and be ready to nominate when the time comes, usually a month before the AGM. It’s a privelege and an honour to represent at Board level but it is also a serious commitment to make. It would be great to have a surplus of people willing to take that commitment on as we move into such an exciting and challenging time for the club.

Autumn President’s Update

Firstly some good news, after a successful junior state titles, some great fundraising efforts and good summer trading we are in a healthy financial position.

As we enter into our off season where we have historically not been as successful and in some years have lost money we need to review how we continue to operate. Looking toward this period and the redevelopment of our club we cannot afford to have a winter trading period that costs us money so we will need the support and understanding of all members as we make some decisions and changes which will impact on how we operate the business side of the club. The first thing you will notice is that we will be reducing staff numbers on many shifts to align with the reduced trading, this will mean that on some nights staff may need your support so I urge all members to chip in and lend a hand if you are at the club and you see a need – pick up a few glasses, take an empty plate back to the kitchen, bring in a few chairs when it gets too cold on the balcony or just ask if there’s anything you can do to help out.

We will continue to monitor our trade and If we find that members and guest numbers pick up and the business needs and can support higher staffing levels we will revisit the changes.

Other things you can do to support our club:

  • Keep in touch with other members at the club over the winter period, drop in for a chat, watch a footy game
  • Bring family and friends down for a drink and or a meal – show them one of the best sunset, storm, gulf views in town
  • Encourage friends to consider us as a function venue
  • Organize a fund raising activity (Quiz night, Balcony Sundays, Bunnings BBQs all started from a person with an idea) speak to me or any Board member to get something started and help with support
  • Volunteer – there’s always jobs to be done including exciting board positions soon to be announced
  • Come along to our strategic planning day  and have your say on the future direction of the club. Details announced soon.

Your understanding and ongoing support is greatly appreciated. See you at the club over winter.
