F45’s 8 Week Challenge!

On Sunday 13th November at 8.30am the Senior Competition Group will be hosting F45 Port Adelaide’s (https://f45training.com.au/portadelaide/) 8 week challenge group for a training session.

We will be introducing them to the fundamentals of surf lifesaving through a session that will not only be a decent work-out but will also be loads of fun.

We want to give them a real taste of SLS by providing opportunities to have a go on boards and skis, have a ride in an IRB, on the back of a jet ski and maybe even in a boat (which they will also have to carry!), try out flags and relays and have a wade race which should really test out their legs.

For this to be successful we will need plenty of support (particularly in the form of water cover). If you are available to help in any way (set-up will be from 7.45am) please contact Craig Lienert on 0430160055 or at cmccwlienert@gmail.com.

Dane, F45 Port Adelaide’s owner, has offered in return to provide a training session (entitled ‘Hollywood’) to 30 of our competitors/members (available to those 16 and above) on Friday 18th November at 6.30pm.  Valued at $30 per person, if we have 30 people interested (the maximum allowed in a class) this is valued at $900.00!!

If you are keen to attend this hour long class please let Karin Humphrey know ASAP at kaz412@bigpond.com. For your place in the session to be confirmed you will also need to provide a completed copy of the f45-questionnaire consent form (to be signed by a parent if U18).

** Please note – 30 places only available and you MUST be aged 16 or above to attend.

Looking forward to working with Dane and the F45 crew.

Chiko Roll time!

Head to the canteen after training this Saturday and grab your Chiko roll!  Limited numbers so get in quick.

Canteen is open from 1130 -1230 and after training from 1430pm.

We will have hot chips, wedges, nachos, hot dogs, toasties, drinks and ice blocks.

Come grab a bite to eat and help support the club.

Education October 2016

The SRC/Top Up Bronze course has their Assessment on 29/10/16 so watch out for them on their first patrol on Saturday afternoon. The Bronze Course has started this week and they will be assessed on 3/12/16, this is a closed course and so anyone now wishing to join a course will wait until the next course running in January/February 2017. In the meanwhile, you can work on your swimming at the Portside Swim Centre on Wednesday nights and connect to the online workbook using this user guide to get to the online portal. (can links be put to the circular and user guide)

Any current active users in the PULSE system need to complete their course prior to 31 October. You should have all been emailed and advised of this. To continue with your course in PULSE after 19/10/16 you will need to go directly to the PULSE website at this link: https://slsa.interactiontraining.net rather than accessing through Members Portal account. From here they just login as normal and continue their course. Any member IT issues should be directed to the helpdesk as always.

IRB Crew course started in August and they are now preparing for their assessment on 19/11/16.

Proficiencies are well under way with 15 people having completed their dry proficiencies and 1 having completed all aspects. Our next Bronze/ARTC/ATV proficiency is on 30/10/16 on patrol so if you are coming down to just do proficiency please come down anytime from 1pm but note that others may be there so it may take time. IRB Crew and Driver Proficiency will be taking place on 28/10/16 at 5pm until 7pm with extra call out to Brian Hession from Grange for assisting us with this so please get there if you can.

Remember if you are wanting to undertake any training please contact me on jenniecharlton1@msn.com and make sure that you have set up an online learning so that you can be linked to the appropriate online learning materials.

Thanks,

Jennie Charlton

Volunteer Bar Assistants trial a success!

As you may have been aware for the last 3 months the Club has been trialling the use of volunteers from our senior membership in assisting the bar staff on certain days over the winter months.

Due to the success of this trial the Club would now like to extend this method of assisting the operations of the bar for the remainder of the 2016/17 season.

For the past 17 weeks the following 14 members have voluntarily provided their services and the Club wishes to sincerely thank them for their contribution to the revenue generation of the bar area; Carmel and Mick Kenny, Karen and Chris Mahney, Steve Weir, Steve Sims, David McGrath, John Stevens, Neil Bissett, Meagan Tunney, Geoff Cole, Ian Robbins, Jeff Bampton and Tony Lloyd.

For the extension of this voluntary assistance to the bar to proceed with the associated cost savings we are seeking further nominations to lighten the load (which is not too onerous anyhow) of those members from the above list that are willing to continue in this capacity.  In addition three further members had indicated their willingness to help. They are Todd Bampton, Andrew and Paul Spencer.

The use of our dedicated bar staff will continue as normal and the volunteers will be rostered in teams on occasions when only one paid staff member is engaged and there are no functions or events booked for that day.

The typical duties of the volunteer would not be primarily directed to customer service, but in returning glasses and bottles to the bar, possibly re-stocking fridges, helping move chairs, changing kegs, using the glasses dishwasher and helping to lock up at the end of the shift.  On very limited occasions it may be necessary to assist behind the bar with the bar staff operating the tills. These duties would only need to be performed if the bar staff are under pressure and cannot undertake these tasks without disrupting customer service.

With the new developments planned for the Club in the not so distant future we hope, it is important for the Club to maximise our sources of revenue to help pay for these improvements in facilities.

Any senior member interested in being included on the Volunteer Bar Assistant Roster, including those mentioned above, should place their name on the list posted on the notice board over the next 14 days.  We need approx 25 volunteers to make the rosters work efficiently.

For more information please contact Steve Weir.

Local lads do our Club proud at Coolangatta

The weekend of 15th/16th saw a number of members travel up to the Gold Coast to take on the Iconic Coolangatta Gold, an endurance Iron Man race based off the movie of the same name from 1984. Saturday was the short course race comprising of a 14.1km Ski paddle, 2.1km beach run, 2.5km ocean swim, 6.1km Board Paddle finishing with a 7.1km Beach run and Nic Schulz took the race on as an U19. He executed a great consistent race placing 13th out of the U19s and 17th overall for the day. He was the fastest South Australian to complete the course.

Sunday saw Willis Leirnert complete the Youth Challenge comprising a 500m beach run, 400m swim, 500m Board paddle and finishing with a 500m run. At just 12 years of age Wilis raced a great race against competitors from some of the big clubs from Queensland and was right in the middle of the field. He really enjoyed the experience of racing against some of the best competitors from across the country.

We also had our open team compete in the long course event on Sunday. The team of Laurence Fletcher, Sean McKenzie, Nick Penny and Leigh Pilkington completed the grueling event in a competitive position of 7th place, in conditions that many have said to have been the toughest they have raced in. Laurence completed the 23km ski leg while battling into a strong head wind for 17 of the 23km. Sean had to swim in rough conditions that made it hard to get into a good rhythm, and saw him start to get hypothermia by the end of the 3.5km swim. Nick Penny completed the 6.1km board paddle in a very competitive time while battling winds that were turning more cross shore as the event went on. To finish the race Leigh completed the run after just overcoming a knee injury weeks before the race, and wasn’t sure if it would cause him difficulties while racing.

Well done to all of our local representatives.  You’ve done Semaphore proud!

Semaphore Members set to challenge themselves at Coolangatta Gold

Willis Lienert is set to become the youngest member of Semaphore Surf Lifesaving Club ever to compete at Coolangatta Gold, one of the most challenging endurance races in surf sports. 12 year old Lienert will take part in the Youth Division.

Lienert will be joined by several other members. Sean McKenzie, Laurence Fletcher, Nick Penny and Leigh Pilkington will compete in the Open Long Course event. Nic Schulz will tackle the short course event in the U/19 division. The seniors have spent the winter months training on their boards and skis, racking up plenty of kilometres in bad weather and on many occasions in the dark. A typical week of training has included more than 60km on the board and skis, 5-6km swimming 5 times a week and 3 hours of running. Willis has been training hard in the pool.

Coolangatta Gold takes place on October 15th and 16th, with Lienert competing on the 2nd day. The Youth Division race includes a 300m run, 400m swim leg, 400m run, 500m board leg and run to the finish line. With the amount of preparation Lienert has done for this event he’s going to be in great shape for the upcoming surf season. His involvement is likely to inspire other juniors at the Club to give the iconic event on the Gold Coast a go in future years.
