30th Anniversary at Point Malcolm Reserve

30th Anniversary at Point Malcolm Reserve

On Sunday the 7th of October, Semaphore SLSC celebrated 30 years based at our current location at Point Malcolm Reserve.   On what was a magnificent Sunday afternoon weather-wise, a massive gathering of current & past members celebrated what has been a marvellous history at the site.  Given the recent Club re-development those in attendance also could see the exciting future ahead of us.

Many thanks to those who assisted in the planning and preparation for the event, as well as those who helped on the day, whether it be serving behind the bar, collecting glasses, serving food or cleaning up at the end of the evening.  We are truly blessed to have such committed and giving members.

Private Function at Club – 13th October

Wedding at the Club this Saturday 13th October

In what is the first large scale external Function at the Club since our re-development, this Saturday we are hosting a Beach Wedding for approx. 125 guests.  Please be advised that the upstairs area of the Club will be closed to all to enable the set-up for the Function.  We will have a Temporary Bar & BBQ downstairs following Nippers Training for all to enjoy.

Training News

SRC & Bronze Medallion Training Last Weekend

Last weekend (5th to 7th of October) approximately 30 of our young members, undertook their SRC & Bronze Top-Up training.  In what must surely be record numbers in one intake, the students & trainers committed to 3 days of long and intensive training both in & out of the water.  Whilst the weather was pleasant outside of the water, feedback was that each of the students now understand what it is like to be a Polar Bear!!

As a club, Semaphore is extremely proud that such a large percentage of our junior/youth members are transitioning from competition to patrolling members.  Given we primarily exist as a Community Volunteer Service Organisation, such large numbers augurs well for the coming years.

Many thanks to Heather Eckert as the principal trainer for the three days. Heather was ably and gratefully assisted by several volunteers handling water cover and other tasks.  Thanks also to Jennie Charlton and her team for helping co-ordinate such a monumental achievement.  The feedback from all the students was extremely positive both on the training itself as well as our new Training Facilities.

Well done everyone!

Club Swimwear and Shirts

Club Swimwear

Following on from last week’s article, please be reminded that we are looking to close orders on the new Club Swimwear next week.  Given that we have elected to ‘Pay As You Order’ to keep the cost as low as possible, it is important that we place our bulk order as soon as possible given that there is a 4-6 week delivery timeframe.  These items are unbelievable value & can only be priced as such through the generous sponsorship of BluBuilt Constructions and our ordering process.

************************

FINZ have provided sample sizes this week, but they are for this week only as they need to be returned after Saturday. Please don’t hesitate, there is no time to waste!!

The Uniform Shop will be open on Saturday from 12pm or alternatively for Senior competitors, orders can be placed via Sean McKenzie.  We are expecting that sample sizes will be available for inspection on Saturday.

SLSSA Junior Information Session Debrief

Proficiencies
Surf Life Saving Australia will be enforcing junior proficiencies this season, requiring Under 8 preliminary proficiencies and Under 9 to Under 13 competition proficiencies are completed and entered in order for a Nipper to be nominated for Carnival 1.  This means that last years proficiencies will not be recognised, as in previous years.

In addition ALL nippers will be required to gain their relevant Surf Ed Awards and have competed in a carnival in order to compete at States, and in the case of Under 11’s to 13’s in order to compete at R & R States.

A table of required proficiencies is posted to the Facebook Group

Carnivals
All dates and locations have been confirmed, there are no changes to the schedule that we released last month.

Under 12’s and 13’s are invited to the Youth Carnival (water events) on the afternoon of Saturday 8th December at Seacliff, as well as a twilight Youth Carnival (beach events) on Friday 14th December also at Seacliff.

Please note *** there will be no late entries allowed this season***
In short if you don’t nominate for a carnival and then show up there is no way to enter you unlike last season, so be sure to nominate as required.

Draft events schedules have been released and will be posted on the Junior Facebook Group page soon

Water Cover etc
Our responsibilities in this area have not changed. So based on the number of kids we enter we are required to supply an according amount of Water Cover. For Semaphore that figure is usually two (minimum) with 1 bronze medallion holder and  1 SRC.  As usual though the more people we have for Water Cover on each carnival day the less time each needs to spend on the sand or in the water.

Additionally at each carnival we will be required to have a nomination for Shallow Water Rescue, this is a competent Surf Swimmer and Bronze Medallion Holder.  While this person will have to attend a morning briefing prior to the carnival start they will not be called upon unless required.

Media – Carnival Photographers
SLSSA have relaxed the maximum of 5 Club Media Personnel (photographers) this allows us to spread the responsibility for taking photos at carnivals. In response to this I would like to ask for nominations from among parents of all age groups.  This way we can pass a camera and vest from group to group to group to accredited people to take photos for your Age Group.

Benefits include being able to be inside the competition area during events, availability of more photos of each Age Group to display at the post Carnival wrap ups and during the season, as well as more for parents to access of their own child.

No previous experience is required, what is required is a Police Clearance (a free one can be organised through the club), a Club Media Form and a short training session with Steph Breden on how the cameras work and your away.

Email Steph on juniorsec@semaphoreslsc.com.au or see me at training.

Club Swimwear and Shirts

Club Swimwear

Thanks to the efforts of many, this season we are looking to change our Club Swimwear provider to FINZ.  FINZ are generally accepted as being a quality provider of Club Apparel and as many of you would already know, are always a busy Vendor at both Senior and Junior Carnivals each year, due to the recognised quality of their products.

Semaphore SLSC, along with many of our metropolitan counterparts, have decided to ‘Order by Demand’ this season.  The benefit of this method is that stock holding costs are not passed on to Club Members. The first and most pressing items are Club Swimwear.  Whilst it is not compulsory that club members compete in Club Swimwear, it is a great sign of our Club spirit that all our competing members look part of our Club.   There are two options for Female competitors (a Single Piece & a 2-Piece Bather) and two options for Male competitors (Speedo-style & Jammer Style) as displayed below.  Delivery times are expected to be approximately 6 weeks from date of order.   Details of how you register your interest & place an order will be provided on the first day of Nippers this Saturday (for Juniors) & via Sean McKenzie (Seniors)

Female Competitors

Male Competitor

Due to the generous & grateful support of BluBuilt Constructions, the cost of the Club Swimwear will be further subsidised for those Club Members who order prior to the 13th of October.  Please find below the subsidised pricing for the Club Swimwear items:

Girls (One-Piece) Sizes 4-14 $41.00
Ladies (One-Piece) Sizes 8-22 $43.00
Girls (Two-Piece) Sizes 4-14 $44.00
Ladies (Two-Piece) Sizes 8-22 $48.00
Boys Racer Style/Speedo Sizes 4-14 $21.00
Mens Racer Style/Speedo Sizes 14-24 $22.00
Boys Jammer Style Sizes 4-14 $30.00
Mens Jammer Style Sizes 14-24 $33.00

Club Shirts

We will also be purchasing a new style Club Shirt from FINZ.  Similarly, to Club Swimwear, Club Shirts will not be held in Stock & will be a ‘Order on Demand’ item. The sample design of the Shirt is pictured below.   Sizes ranges from Kids Size 10 up to Adult 3XL.  It is expected that the cost of the Shirts will be $55.00 per shirt.   The shirts are Sun-Smart & look terrific either on the Beach or around the Club.  The only catch is that we need a minimum order of 100 Shirts, so we need your support to get the first batch up & running.   A sample of the shirt will be available for viewing at the Club on Nippers Opening Days of 6th & 13th of October.  (Please note the design on the back of the Shirt has not yet been confirmed).

Information about other items of Club Apparel, will be forthcoming in the next few weeks.

Kind regards,

Bruce Moseley & Sean McKenzie.
