Beach training

Beach training pre season 2014-15

The 2014/15 season is now only a month away! We have trained hard through the colder months in the water with board and ski and many have ventured to the pool for swim sessions. It is now time to add beach training into our schedule. Starting Sunday September 14th Jeff Bampton will be running beach training sessions. Initially these will run in conjunction with Kirsty Low’s Bootcamp but as the season gets underway and Bootcamp winds up this training will likely move to late Saturday morning after ski and board training. We are looking at making the beach training sessions discipline specific with a focus on sprints, relays, flags and the 2k run. Jeff will have a program that will include fitness tests. This training is available for ALL Masters, seniors and U14s that are keen to either focus on beach disciplines and/or improve their ability in this area.
Are you keen? Come and join the Bootcamp crew at 9am Sunday 14th September for warm-up. Jeff will then take his group for a 45-60 minute beach training session. The club will be open for breakfast and coffee afterwards.

Board and Ski training 23/8

Saturday mornings (23/8) board and ski training has been shifted to Sunday morning. Please meet at the club at 7am to head to the mid coast. Bring shortboards for a surf afterwards if you can stay. If you have to come back earlier for prior commitments own transport must be organised, otherwise there will be enough transport provided.

2014/15 membership payments and renewals now online

You asked for it and it’s finally here! You can now renew your membership and pay online!

No more waiting inline at the club. This year online membership payments and renewals are finally here. You can even pay your competition levy at the same time and get an itemised receipt. For all the details of how to do it, go to the membership page and see the handy how-to video or follow the step by step image guide at the bottom of the membership page.

The process is pretty straight forward but you will need to ensure you input the correct amounts and itemise your inputs manually. Unfortunately this is a limitation of the payment gateway provided to us however there is a handy price list both on the payment screen at lifesavingonline.com.au and on the membership page.

Early birds before 26/10/14

If you pay before the 26th of October (online or at the club) you will get an early bird discount. Full discount details are available on the membership page and dates and times for membership payments and renewals in person will be published soon.

We really want you to pay online!

We understand that not everyone has a credit card or likes to pay online but paying at the club does result in a lot more manual work. So as a special reward for online payments before the 26/10/2014 you will also receive 10% off at the Bistro. Just bring your online receipt (an email on your phone/iPad or a printed version) in before the end of October 2014 and show the staff when ordering to claim your discount.

2014 Youth Development Camp Wrap Up

Congratulations to Bryana Bisset and Tyson Sarunic who were selected to represent Semaphore at the 2014 ‘Be Active’ SLSSA Youth Development Camp.
This camp was conducted outback in the Flinders Ranges at Edeowie Station (near Wilpena Pound) from Monday 7th July to Friday 11th July.
The Senior Surf Sports Committee recognise Bryana and Tyson as future leaders of our club and attendance at this camp will encourage and strengthen their skills in teamwork, leadership and overall personal development.
Well done Bryana and Tyson!
Please keep reading to hear all about the camp from Bryana and Tyson’s perspective. Also, check out the photos of the camp and the amazing Flinders Ranges.

From Bryana: –
I have just returned from a great week at Edeiowe station, near Hawker in The Flinders Ranges on a Youth Development camp through surf life saving.
There was 18 participants from various SA clubs. We all travelled by mini bus on Monday and returned Friday.
Our trip included a range of team bonding exercises, including climbing St Mary’s peak as a team, a Gorge walk through Wilpena pound, cooking meals, scavenger hunt activities, camp fire songs, lessons on Eco surf, fire building and cleaning dishes.
My highlights of the trip were; conquering St Mary’s Peak as it was an amazing view and accidently getting the bus bogged! We pulled together as a team to get it out.
The camp gets many of the participants out of their comfort zones while exploring new surroundings. Having great weather was a bonus as well as receiving Surf rescue jackets.
Overall I highly recommend people to go on the camp as it is an experience of a life time, where memories won’t be forgotten and new friends are made.

From Tyson: –
For the first week of the July school holidays a group of young life savers from various different clubs went on a five day camp in the Flinders Ranges, where we learnt all about teamwork and leadership.
We got to climb the highest peak and there were lots of other activities that got us to grow and bond as a team.
I thought the highlight of the camp was just meeting new people and being able to get through hard physical and mental challenges with each other. The start of the week for some people was a bit awkward as not everyone knew each other and talking on a personal level straight away was tricky. Through the week I think everyone became friends and were able to talk to each other without feeling awkward. We had to be self sufficient for most of the week including cooking and cleaning. Some of the things we got to do were hiking, climbing and team building activities.
I would definitely recommend this camp as l got to learn leadership skills, learn how to cope being out of my comfort zone and be kilometres away from the closest beach with a bunch of people l now consider new friends.
Thank you Semaphore for nominating me!

Senior Surf Camp Round Up

The first senior surf camp of the season was held over the weekend of 4-6th July at Chiton Rocks SLSC. The first camp was less about training and more about team bonding; introducing/further developing relationships between the younger seniors and the older ‘lads’ of our club in order to further ‘bridge the gap’.
We all arrived at different times on Friday (lunchtime, in time for an afternoon surf, later in the evening).
Saturday morning began with the sound of the surf out in front of Chiton rocks. We completed a run around the local surf spots, trying to find a spot that would be suitable for everyone. We ended up back at the surf club with a solid 4ft wave that made life hard even for the older more experienced guys.
After a good feed, world cup fever got a hold of us and a quick 5 a side game of football (soccer for the uneducated) was organised. After about 40 minutes of hectic back and forth we turned our attention back to the surf. A spot a few hundred metres down the beach was found and proved to be much more suitable for the whole group with the majority catching their fair share of waves and dumpings.
Sunday morning started with the surf dying down slightly and Nick and Ben heading back to Christies Beach for IRB state titles. Everyone else packed the cars and moved to Middleton for the last surf. A nice 2-3ft surf proved perfect for the whole group, and saw us spread out across the breaks to get our waves. After a couple of hours of surfing we returned to Chiton Rocks SLSC, cleaned and packed up and headed to Christies to watch the final stages of IRB states. We were lucky enough to see our masters bring home Semaphore’s first IRB state medal!
Overall this turned out to be a great weekend. Everyone got to know each other better, and it gave us a good idea of what to expect for the up and coming season and future camps (we have more planned for later in the year).
Thanks to Nick for organising and everyone for attending.
