2014 Juniors Age Group Managers and Assistants Needed

As another surf season rapidly approaches it is time to get together and start getting organised for the season ahead. So I would like to invite you and anyone else who you know that expressed interest to Brad in either becoming an age group manager or assistant age group manager or helper to join us in meeting on Wednesday 30th July at the club at 7.30pm to start planning the 2014/15 season.

I have shared with a few people some ideas I have for the season and have asked a number of people if they could lead some additional training sessions during the week on top of board training on a Friday afternoon.

Ideally I would like a session dedicated to beach events, that includes sprints, flags beach relays and wades that would be open to the Under 9’s and upwards.

Another session would be open for Under 11’s and upwards that would concentrate on board rescue and iron person training. These additional sessions will only take place if we can get enough volunteers to assist in co-ordinating the sessions along with ensuring we get enough water cover to make it happen.

Please come prepared to share any thoughts or ideas you have. For those who are really keen carnival dates are already listed on the SLSA website, although venues have not been released at the moment.

I hope you can make the meeting, if you are unable to attend please feel free to give me call.

Regards

2014 Youth Development Camp Wrap Up

Congratulations to Bryana Bisset and Tyson Sarunic who were selected to represent Semaphore at the 2014 ‘Be Active’ SLSSA Youth Development Camp.
This camp was conducted outback in the Flinders Ranges at Edeowie Station (near Wilpena Pound) from Monday 7th July to Friday 11th July.
The Senior Surf Sports Committee recognise Bryana and Tyson as future leaders of our club and attendance at this camp will encourage and strengthen their skills in teamwork, leadership and overall personal development.
Well done Bryana and Tyson!
Please keep reading to hear all about the camp from Bryana and Tyson’s perspective. Also, check out the photos of the camp and the amazing Flinders Ranges.

From Bryana: –
I have just returned from a great week at Edeiowe station, near Hawker in The Flinders Ranges on a Youth Development camp through surf life saving.
There was 18 participants from various SA clubs. We all travelled by mini bus on Monday and returned Friday.
Our trip included a range of team bonding exercises, including climbing St Mary’s peak as a team, a Gorge walk through Wilpena pound, cooking meals, scavenger hunt activities, camp fire songs, lessons on Eco surf, fire building and cleaning dishes.
My highlights of the trip were; conquering St Mary’s Peak as it was an amazing view and accidently getting the bus bogged! We pulled together as a team to get it out.
The camp gets many of the participants out of their comfort zones while exploring new surroundings. Having great weather was a bonus as well as receiving Surf rescue jackets.
Overall I highly recommend people to go on the camp as it is an experience of a life time, where memories won’t be forgotten and new friends are made.

From Tyson: –
For the first week of the July school holidays a group of young life savers from various different clubs went on a five day camp in the Flinders Ranges, where we learnt all about teamwork and leadership.
We got to climb the highest peak and there were lots of other activities that got us to grow and bond as a team.
I thought the highlight of the camp was just meeting new people and being able to get through hard physical and mental challenges with each other. The start of the week for some people was a bit awkward as not everyone knew each other and talking on a personal level straight away was tricky. Through the week I think everyone became friends and were able to talk to each other without feeling awkward. We had to be self sufficient for most of the week including cooking and cleaning. Some of the things we got to do were hiking, climbing and team building activities.
I would definitely recommend this camp as l got to learn leadership skills, learn how to cope being out of my comfort zone and be kilometres away from the closest beach with a bunch of people l now consider new friends.
Thank you Semaphore for nominating me!

Senior Surf Camp Round Up

The first senior surf camp of the season was held over the weekend of 4-6th July at Chiton Rocks SLSC. The first camp was less about training and more about team bonding; introducing/further developing relationships between the younger seniors and the older ‘lads’ of our club in order to further ‘bridge the gap’.
We all arrived at different times on Friday (lunchtime, in time for an afternoon surf, later in the evening).
Saturday morning began with the sound of the surf out in front of Chiton rocks. We completed a run around the local surf spots, trying to find a spot that would be suitable for everyone. We ended up back at the surf club with a solid 4ft wave that made life hard even for the older more experienced guys.
After a good feed, world cup fever got a hold of us and a quick 5 a side game of football (soccer for the uneducated) was organised. After about 40 minutes of hectic back and forth we turned our attention back to the surf. A spot a few hundred metres down the beach was found and proved to be much more suitable for the whole group with the majority catching their fair share of waves and dumpings.
Sunday morning started with the surf dying down slightly and Nick and Ben heading back to Christies Beach for IRB state titles. Everyone else packed the cars and moved to Middleton for the last surf. A nice 2-3ft surf proved perfect for the whole group, and saw us spread out across the breaks to get our waves. After a couple of hours of surfing we returned to Chiton Rocks SLSC, cleaned and packed up and headed to Christies to watch the final stages of IRB states. We were lucky enough to see our masters bring home Semaphore’s first IRB state medal!
Overall this turned out to be a great weekend. Everyone got to know each other better, and it gave us a good idea of what to expect for the up and coming season and future camps (we have more planned for later in the year).
Thanks to Nick for organising and everyone for attending.
