Christmas Bar and Bistro Opening Days 2016

The bistro will be closed as of the 24th December and will reopen on Thursday 5th January. 
The Board of Management will staff the bar for the traditional Xmas day members only drinks. Times TBC next week. 

The bar will then be open Thursday, Fridayfrom 5pm and Saturday and Sunday from 4pm throughout the holidays!

 

Become Semaphore SLSC’s Number 1 Ticket holder!

You can become the Number 1 ticket holder at the Semaphore SLSC by simply entering a raffle!  Tickets are $5 and are sold at the Club Bar.

What do you receive if you are crowned Number 1 ticket holder? A refund of your personal membership, a designated parking spot at the Club and free drinks on the night of the draw.

The crowning is set to take place on December 9th so if you are a member get your tickets now!

 

 

Time to bake up a storm for our Cake Stall Fundraiser!

The Semaphore Surf Lifesaving Club is hosting cake stall fundraisers at the Woodville Bunnings Store on the following dates:

  • Sunday 30th October 2017
  • Sunday 4th December 2017

We are seeking help from any member to bake some cakes, slices and biscuits for the stall.  Please no goods that contain ingredients that require refrigeration e.g. cream.

We are also able to sell jams and preserves if that is preferable.

If you could assist, please bring your goodies upstairs to the club on the Saturday beforehand (a list of ingredients is needed for the label which we are required for food safety requirements).

Volunteer Bar Assistants trial a success!

As you may have been aware for the last 3 months the Club has been trialling the use of volunteers from our senior membership in assisting the bar staff on certain days over the winter months.

Due to the success of this trial the Club would now like to extend this method of assisting the operations of the bar for the remainder of the 2016/17 season.

For the past 17 weeks the following 14 members have voluntarily provided their services and the Club wishes to sincerely thank them for their contribution to the revenue generation of the bar area; Carmel and Mick Kenny, Karen and Chris Mahney, Steve Weir, Steve Sims, David McGrath, John Stevens, Neil Bissett, Meagan Tunney, Geoff Cole, Ian Robbins, Jeff Bampton and Tony Lloyd.

For the extension of this voluntary assistance to the bar to proceed with the associated cost savings we are seeking further nominations to lighten the load (which is not too onerous anyhow) of those members from the above list that are willing to continue in this capacity.  In addition three further members had indicated their willingness to help. They are Todd Bampton, Andrew and Paul Spencer.

The use of our dedicated bar staff will continue as normal and the volunteers will be rostered in teams on occasions when only one paid staff member is engaged and there are no functions or events booked for that day.

The typical duties of the volunteer would not be primarily directed to customer service, but in returning glasses and bottles to the bar, possibly re-stocking fridges, helping move chairs, changing kegs, using the glasses dishwasher and helping to lock up at the end of the shift.  On very limited occasions it may be necessary to assist behind the bar with the bar staff operating the tills. These duties would only need to be performed if the bar staff are under pressure and cannot undertake these tasks without disrupting customer service.

With the new developments planned for the Club in the not so distant future we hope, it is important for the Club to maximise our sources of revenue to help pay for these improvements in facilities.

Any senior member interested in being included on the Volunteer Bar Assistant Roster, including those mentioned above, should place their name on the list posted on the notice board over the next 14 days.  We need approx 25 volunteers to make the rosters work efficiently.

2016/17 Here We Come!

A reminder that junior training starts this Saturday 8th October.

To avoid the queues you can register and pay online now but if you need assistance you can register and pay on Saturday at the Club from 11am.

You must complete the health declaration forms prior to training whether you are an existing member or not please get there early to complete these. Briefing on the lawn at 12:45pm for a 1.00pm start and a 3pm finish.

The canteen will be open prior to training from 11:30am-12:45pm with a reduced menu and after training 3pm – approx. 4:30pm. We will be running with a different special each week, so keep your eye out for our “Canteen Special” posts.

Other dates to remember:

  • Pool Swimming starts Wednesday October 12 at the Largs Bay Swim Centre at 7.00pm for Under 10’s to Under 13’s
  • Board Training start Friday October 14 at 5.00pm at the Club for Under 10’s to Under 13’s.
  • (Under 9’s will be able to join pool swimming and board training once they have completed their proficiency qualifications)
  • At the conclusion of training we will have a club run – all age groups and parents welcome 1 or 2 km

I am pleased to announce that if you pay your membership and competition levy on Saturday you will receive a free Pink Hi-Vis Training top. You will need to speak to me about this (stocks are limited so get in quick).

VOLUNTEER BAR ASSISTANTS – EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST SOUGHT

The BOM is interested in trialling the use of volunteers from our Senior Membership in assisting the

bar staff on some days over the winter months.

Everyone would be aware of the excellent service provided by our dedicated bar staff over the years

and that over the winter period, particularly on most Saturdays and Sundays, the number of

customers is markedly reduced. The BOM is keen to trial the bar running with only one paid staff

member with back-up provided by volunteers if the bar gets busy on any of the Saturday or Sunday

shifts when there are no functions or events booked for that day.

coordinate and liaise with the bar staff. It is envisaged that each volunteer team would not be

rostered more than once a month over this 4-5 month period. Similar to the patrol roster.

With the exiting news of finally receiving Planning Consent from Charles Stuart Council for our

upgrade planned for the Club , it is important for the Club to maximise our resources of revenue to

help pay for these improvements in facilities.

Care of Equipment

Members need to remember to look after all our Equipment as it is often hard and expensive to replace. The club vehicle was found on Monday full of sand. Underneath the car, the dashboard and including in the air vents. If you use it on the beach, please ensure you wash the outside down and vacuum the inside out. If you have to deflate the tires to get on or off the beach it is YOUR job to re-inflate them. We have a compressor and tire attachment in the patrol area, it shouldn’t be up to someone else.

Right – I don’t get cranky often but the careless driving of ATVs running into the old Snowy Wallace Wooden surf boat in the Patrol room is starting to get to me.  The boat is an excellent piece of rowing history is one of a few remaining wooden surf boats in the country, triple laminate wood only a few millimetres thick. We want to restore it this winter and already the original irreplaceable sponsor decal and the first layer of laminate is damaged.

Please ensure we are looking after all boards and skis as we are less than 5 weeks from senior states. Getting equipment fixed now is extremely hard

Boaties Corner

Masters State Titles

 

What an exciting weekend for the Masters Rowers with the State carnival held on Saturday at Aldinga Beach. A reasonably calm day with a little bubble from the gate can to shore.  Semaphore had six teams in with Excellent results.  Thanks again to Simsy for directing us on the beach and keeping us heading in the right direction, and organising team Shirts from EzyFit, our major sponsor in the boats section.

 

The AngryBirds (F 160+ Donna, Tracy, Louise & Kirsty) got a silver medal narrowly missing out on gold with their arch rivals for the day Port Elliot.  This is the first Female rowing medal for Semaphore “ever”– Fantastic effort from the ladies.

 

The Jacco’s (M160+ Johno, Craig A, Craig L, & Owen) cracked their Gold this year which now gives them the complete medal set after three years. Tight racing with Somerton giving them a very hard time.

 

The Trog’s (M220+ Mainy,Weiry,Mick & Stephen) recovered well from the first race to salvage a bronze from two strong seconds in the 2nd and 3rd races. Well done.

 

The Marty team (F120+ Marty,Dale,Browny & Aaron) Managed to come away with Gold from their first training session for the year. This makes it an excellent representation from Semaphore.

 

The Undecideds (F180+ – Jackie,Debb,Claire & Heather) had a great race day coming home in the middle of the pack all day. Excellent effort for their first year of rowing.

 

The Bizzalloys (M180+ The president, Mick L, Richard, & Barts) drew  the short straw with the most heavily contested division. After their extensive training session they represented Semaphore well. Great effort guys.

 

So an excellent effort from the Boaties in state masters.

Club Champs

 

For Club Championships there will be two events

1km time trial for anybody between 1700 and 1800 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Come and get your time recorded by Aaron during these times.

 

Second event will be a handicap races for the boaties. 1400 on Saturday after Junior events and before presentations.
